Our mission at the OVP is to have year-round produce available. Here are examples of the crops we have grown in recent seasons:
Cold Weather Crops: Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cilantro, Dino Kale, Red Ursa Kale, Several varieties of Lettuce, Onions, Swiss Chard, Beets, Carrots, Snow Peas, Sweet Peas
Summer Crops: Several varieties of Tomatoes including White Cherry, Brandywine, and Cherokee Purple; Black Beauty Eggplant, Turkish Eggplant, Bell Peppers, Cayenne and Jalapeno Peppers, Butternut Squash, Dessert Squash, Ornamental Gourds, Slicing Cucumbers, Pickling Cucumbers, and several varieties of Flowers and Herbs. In addition: Part of being a truly organic and sustainable farm is to encourage beneficial insects and pollinators to come hang out and do their magic. Also, by attracting certain insects and birds, we deter other, not so desirable characters from being around. For this reason, in addition to the vast array of crops we grow in the field, we also proudly maintain a beautiful hedgerow which borders the garden on one side. This hedgerow houses several native species of plants such as Ceanothus and Coyote Bush, as well as many perennial herbs like Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. We also have a mini-orchard of Pomegranates mixed in, which have supplied us with delicious Pomegranates throughout the winter months. In addition to the hedgerow, there is a large section of the farm which is designated specifically for flower beds. These range from hardy perennials like Asters and Statice to lovely annuals like Cosmos and Zinnias. The flower beds do a wonderful job of attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, making for a beautiful display in the spring and summer months. |
