Please come prepared to the first session by having read as much of the Agamemnon as you can over the break. Even if it is only a few hundred lines that would be a great help. Your goal over the semester will be to read all 3 plays of the trilogy in Greek in addition to commenting on parts of these weekly in class and presenting and writing up a final research paper on some aspect of the trilogy. Use the Page edition (OCT), which is also available via TLG. You will find that Ag. is the hardest Greek you've ever encountered. A commentary or two would help greatly; ultimately you will want to consult Fraenkel for every verse, but D/P is an excellent start. A list of books to acquire (buy, borrow or steal) is given elsewhere on this site. We will start in on the Prologue and part of the first Stasimon on Jan. 7. In class we will focus on the first two plays, which does not exonerate you from focusing on the third. I am contemplating a translation exam at some point during the term drawing on expectations of prepared and sight passages. |
