Research

My research focuses on the relationship between the state, society, and the security sector (especially the military) in the non-Western regions and especially in the Middle East. In particular, I am interested in the role of the military in the process of state formation and its three major facets (state-building; state-construction or statecraft; and national integration or nation-building); in the relationship between the security sector and the various civilian sectors; and in the relationship between the security sector and the pattern of inter-sectoral relations in the state. I am also interested in intrastate conflict and peace, and particularly in the structural, rational and cultural factors underpinning the conflicts in Lebanon, Iraq and Israel/Palestine.
