Interest Research Groups have existed throughout Ontario, across
Canada, and all over the U.S. since their foundation by Ralph Nader in
1971. Our lovely PIRG at the University of Ottawa was founded by
student referendum on November 10, 1977 with support from over 75% of
student voters. An office space was established and OPIRG Ottawa opened
its doors officially in the Fall of 1978. The Resource Centre was
established in 1980. How does OPIRG-Ottawa work? OPIRG-Ottawa is run by a democratically elected Board of Directors. There are seven positions on the Board, the majority of which are held by students at the University of Ottawa. The OPIRG Board of Directors is responsible for determining the programming, priorities, budgeting, policies and campaigns of the organization. The Board of Directors at OPIRG is a devoted group of volunteers who oversees the organization. The Board splits its many duties into Portfolios: Treasurer, Human Resources, Volunteer, Campus Relations, Action Groups, Community and Media Relations, and Provincial Relations The Board of directors holds regular board meetings every two weeks. Un bureau a été mis en place et l’ouverture officielle de GRIPO Ottawa a eu lieu en automne 1978. Le Centre de ressources a été mis sur pied en 1980.
Depuis notre fondation, nous avons traité d’enjeux
d’intérêt public (droits de
scolarité,
environnement, justice sociale, guerre, sexisme, racisme, droits des
peuples autochtones, etc.) à travers des
événements tels que des soirées
cinéma, des
conférences, des forums et débats publics, des
journées d’échange communautaire, des
cafés
équitables et des kiosques d’information. Nous
avons aussi
appuyé le travail de dizaines de groupes d'action sur ces
questions et bien d’autres à
travers les
années. En tant que groupe non-partisan, qui n’est
affilié à aucun parti ou mouvement, nous nous
sommes
concentrés sur la conscientisation,
l’éducation et
