If you have some ideas, tips,  templates for making Open Source Software work in the Classroom,  I'd love to add them to this site.

At this years FOSSVT Conference  featuring (Free and Open Source Software in Schools) I presented a session that demonstrated how to tweak three open source tools to make them truly useful classroom tools.

1) Tux Paint:

  • learn how to modify the Tux Paint Config files for improved classroom management
  • create curricular related templates or starter pages
  • add new collection of stamps that match your curricular units
  • See Attachment for a folder of some of the Templates we Created for this workshop.  Extract them, then copy and past them in your Tux Starters Folder

2)  Type Faster:

  • Replace the lessons and game content with words that are grade level appropriate or relate to your curricular goals (i.e. spelling,  science words, reading vocabulary)
  • Changing the length of lessons and speed of the game drills

3)  Open Office:

  • Adding ClipArt Categories to the Gallery Tool to make adding clipart an easier and more visual process.   Directions from Solveg Haugland
    We used the WP Clipart
  • Email me if you'd like me to send you the  Config Files we created to make the WP Clipart files appear under Open Office Gallery.
42 meg file would not attach here.
    • First Install WP Clipart
    • Then copy the extracted config files directly into the WP Clipart folder (in our school its C:\Program Files\wpclipart)
    • Then go to Open Office,  TOOLS,  Options, PATHS and add C:\Program Files\wpclipart  to the Gallery Paths.
(We found that sometimes you need to restart your computer for this to work)
don't forget to turn the Gallery Toolbar View on.  Now you can drag and drop these into any Open Office Document.
