The OpenCrimeScene project is a research project on developing a 3D learning environment for virtual crime scene investigations. The project was brought into being by the University of the Police of Saxony-Anhalt and the Computer Graphics and Interactive Systems Group of the University of Magdeburg in September 2005. The virtual crime scene is developed by members of the graphics group at the Department of Simulation and Graphics in close collaboration with the University of the Police.

Goals

  • Allow the teacher to set up a virtual crime scene, to arrange traces, and to prepare the virtual examination (e.g. place questions).
  • Allow the student to recapitulate what he/she has learned in practical experience within a virtual learning environment (e.g. secure traces).
  • Examine the student's virtual crime scene investigations and analyze his or her behaviour (manually and automatically).

Roadmap

The virtual crime scene features an interesting set of research topics for computer graphics. Currently six to seven teams (master and pre-degree students) are working on realizing a virtual learning environment focused on crime scene investigations. These topics range from general (e.g. how to animate a character) to specific (e.g. how to model fingerprints). The following list gives an overview of what is going to be done:

  • Animation and navigation of characters
  • Interaction between character and scene objects
  • Placing of traces in the scene
  • Modeling of traces
  • Communication between characters
  • Reconstructing the course of events
  • Development of an authoring tool for the teachers
