In the main this means electric propulsion, but it also includes such novel methods as solar sails and space tethers. I am also involved with work in space and planetary robotics and the optimisation of the development of large scale production satellites. Other involvements As well as my research areas, I am interested in space policy and am heavily involved in space education and outreach activities. I also commentate on space affairs for the media from time to time and have made more than 250 broadcasts. Back in 1989 I was among the final 20 candidates contending to fly to the Mir space station on the UK-USSR Juno/Soyuz TM-12 mission. I have also written what I believe to be the first ever paper on the design of extraterrestrial gardens.
