Online Learning in the Los Angeles Unified School District In May 2009, the U.S. Department of Education released a report entitled Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies. Among the key findings were: (1) Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction; (2) Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction. Online (or virtual) learning provides students access to high quality, standards-based, content-driven learning experiences that meet their learning needs and expand the boundaries of the classroom. These programs provide learning opportunities that ensure students within the District have equitable access to a quality education. Online learning in LAUSD is also referred to as the Los Angeles Virtual Academy (LAVA). |
