Language Arts

Spelling

To meet California Standards for Writing Conventions, the fifth grade team has developed a language program from two sources: Words Their Way and Scholastic Press.  Students will study spelling patterns and challenging vocabulary that will enhance and build their word repetoire.  During the week, students will work with both sets of words, their spelling patterns, their sullabication, and their meanings. These spelling patterns and general spelling rules will be of value as they prepare for both middle and high school.  These lists address how words are formed, where words come from, acronyms, homonyms, word parts, etc. Students will have a chance, through a variety of activities, to use these words, explore them, think about them, and hopefully, learn to spell them.

On Fridays, we will test their knowledge of the spelling pattern by spelling the words and sorting them on the test.  The students must also know the spelling and definition of each vocabulary words.

Grammar

We'll be beginning working on grammar units beginning this week. Students will receive the grammar packets on Wednesday or Thursday of each week and they will be tested on the material covered the following Wednesday.  We go through each lesson as a class together, then students use their packets for practice.  Students are expected to study for these tests using their packets.  I will be looking at their writing assignments for authentic use of what we learn in the grammar packets!
