Current Events

See Attachments below for a copy of our current events graphic organizer.

Every other week, each student will be presenting an article for current events. Students are responsible for keeping track of when they will be presenting.

Current Events presentations occur on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

What is the purpose of doing Current Events?

We find that students are not as aware of events going on around the country as they should be. We are encouraging students to take an active role in learning about current events.  Students are also learning how to speak in front of an audience regularly, which helps boost confidence and help them in the future.

What kind of articles can students use?

Students should find articles that affect the lives of people around them.  National news articles are usually a safe bet.  Articles about politics, the government, California, disasters, are acceptable as long as they can somehow explain how this article is important to all of us.

Students should not choose regular sports articles or sensational news to present.  Accidents, human interest, and sports would not be considered main events that affect our lives.  An exception to this rule would be if the accident, human interest, or sports article caused a change in laws, which in turn affects the everyday person. In this case, the article is acceptable.

What do the students have to do?

The students must cut out or print out the article for their presentation.  They must also fill out a graphic organizer using complete sentences. Students must avoid the use of the words “article” and “event” in their sentences.

On their assigned day, students will present their article in front of the class.  They will need to speak clearly, slowly, and make adequate eye contact.  To start, the students are allowed to read off their graphic organizers to present.  By the end of the school year, students should be presenting their current events with minimal notes.

What if we don’t get the newspaper?
