Comment on the following.
Recording videos, voice, etc.
Use NoteShare
To create a basic mp3 really quickly, use NoteShare. Record your voice, then drag the file to your desktop. Done.
Use GarageBandTo create more elaborate podcasts, use GarageBand. Add the proper track (male or female voice), record your narration, add a jingle, export to disk as mp3, done.
To record a slideshow narration, create your slides in Keynote, then click record the slideshow (from Slideshow), and talk over the slideshow. Using a good mic improves the quality of your recording. When finished, export as quicktime.
To record a video of yourselves, use Photo Booth for smaller videos, which do not need to be edited. Ask your students to do the same.
To record elaborate video, with serious editing, use iMovie. (Search your computer for iMovie HD, if you are more familiar with that version, I love it!).
To do a screencast, if you have Smart Notebook installed, use the built-in recorder. If not, use online services, like ScreenToaster or Screencast-o-matic, or install Jing (in MyApps) (all free). Good to know! Creating PresentationsLearn about visualizationsCheck it out! Only 6 mins of your time. Great visualizations.
Video Tutorials from AppleDo not write off the Help section. It's the best place to learn about a particular issue you are having. True, if you know the exact search term it helps, but you are more likely to find it if you try than if you give up right away. Create your own presentation (for either your students, or as an advertisement for your subject area - may not be such a bad idea after all.) Requirements for the presentation:
- Follow the professional advice given in Effective Information Visualization
- Your presentation must be 3 minutes long
- You can't read off the slides
- Use as much white space (or black space; "white space" is figurative in this case, and is part of good design)
- Slides must be on auto advance
- Your presentation must have at least 5 slides, but no more than 12
- Record your slideshow - remember, auto-advance, time it! and no more than 3 mins.
Advanced:
- Export your slideshow as Powerpoint and upload it to Slideshare
- Record your slideshow and export as QuickTime. Post to your blog.
- Add appropriate background music to your slideshow. Adjust volume, duration of the song, etc.
- Use some of the advanced animation features, as appropriate. Use original images and graphs, as appropriate.
Steps and resources:
- Use Google and its tools for research: Try Wonderwheel, or Timeline; try Books or News, Blogs.
- Explore these resources:
- Amazon Web Services Data Sets
– Including the human genome, DNA sequences, chemical databases, census
information, DOT databases on transportation (aviation, highway, bike,
maritime, etc)
- New York Times developer site:
the NYT has easy APIs for articles, best sellers, campaign finance,
user comments, congress, movie reviews, and the New York State
Legislature
- Yahoo Developer Network – APIs for finance, traffic, weather, Flickr, Del.icio.us, and many others
- Twitter API documentation
- Bureau of Labor Statistics – Information on all sorts of economic statistics for the US
- FEC Data – public database for all political giving. WARNING: Very poorly kept, standards are obviously not a big deal to these guys
- Check out what others have to say about your subject, or issue. Try Debatabase to see cons and pros (if your issue/topic is available).
- Work with a partner or by yourself - it's flexible.
- Complete and present your project.
