Agenda:
Discernment on our future meeting place
The Aisquith Street Meeting house has not been repaired by the City of Baltimore since Hurricane Irene caused significant damage to the roof. We will meet to discuss preferences and hold these in the Light to see if these desires are in unity with what God is calling us to do.
Options: return to meeting in homes, meet in the classroom building in the main room or in the computer room upstairs, or perhaps other options will make themselves known |

October 30 -- Bible Reading and Prayers for the Dead Halloween is not a pagan holiday. It one of the most celebrated American holidays based on pagan traditions and beliefs. Quakers traditionally do not participate in holidays, and look upon anything that promotes violence one hand or the dumbing of the mind and spirit on the other.
However, both pagan and Hebrew peoples had a sense of the reality that exists beyond what we feel with our "5 senses," and this very much influences Christian thought. Whereas Celtic peoples believed that at certain times the Veil between worlds was thinner than others, and that spirits of all temperaments could walk this realm at times, Christians believed that some souls experienced paradise and others torment after this life. Spiritualists believe that those who do harm on this world are automatically reincarnated back into this world to "try again" whereas those who have learned a lesson on this realm have a choice as to when and how they will reincarnate.
We will read the traditional Christian teachings welcoming all Friends are welcome to bring blue (traditional Christian color) candles to represent someone departed.
Opening silent prayer. Lighting of Single White candle, anointed with oil. Bible Readings:
What do the Scriptures say about the resurrection of the dead? Acts 24:15 How does resurrection of people work for those who have been "good" or "bad?" What is the answer to those who ask how the dead are to be raised and with what kind of body? 1 Corinthians 15:36-44 Is this our natural body or a spiritual body? 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 Are there examples or inferences of praying for the dead? 1 Timothy 1:16-18 2 Maccabees 12:38-46
Lighting of Blue Candles, anoint with oil if desired. Friends may name those whom the candles represent if they wish so that others gathered may pray for those persons as well.
Silent prayer and meditation for the departed. We will pause at 5:50 before beginning our meeting for worship.

On October 16, 2011 @ 5pm we'll be reading highlights of and discussing Friends United Meeting's Report. The goal is to understand our faith tradition and see where we are called to participate in the larger body of Friends.
Baltimore Yearly Meeting is a member yearly meeting of Friends United Meeting. As we seek to grow together in community, it's important that we know and identify with larger bodies of Quakers. If we believe in community, if we truly welcome all Quakers and non Quakers at Old Town, we should know who we are, right?
Additionally, Kevin-Douglas been asked by Quaker Life to submit an article based on how small meetings need help and could be nurtured by traveling ministers, etc. This fits in with their state of the meeting report. How we respond would be of great help to this article. They would even welcome the article being written by our group!
Here is what we will learn on Sunday (copies available today at worship) Why was FUM created? (Read from 1922 excerpt from Rufus Jones, Quaker minister) How do different Quakers view Friends United Meeting? Who makes up Friends United Meeting? Where does the money go? What are proposed ideas for the future of FUM?
Queries for worship sharing: How important is it for me to be part of an international, multicultural Quaker organization? As a small worship group, what are our needs (religious education has been one we have identified)? Do I desire for the Spirit to renew my mind? Am I willing to enter into a deeper religious life and to consecrate my heart and will to God? Do I have a positive loyalty to the faith? |
