Welcome to Shansy's Lair!
Here I am going to provide a weekly update on my musical tastes, so stay tuned people..! 5 June 2009
I've been keen to add some hip-hop to the page in recent weeks but haven't found anything from contemporary artists that would be appropriate so again I've taken us back a year or 6.
Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues (2003)
Buck 65 bridges are the enormous gap between country and hip-hop with incredible ease. Wicked and Wired is an absolute conquest and I'm thinking of words to explain the grit that is abundant in this track but you'll probably just have to listen to it yourself. Carlene Carter herself would have been real proud...!
Go Kobe. Lakers in 5.

So far things seem to be going relatively smoothly on this page...some like the content, so have been critical. Anyway, I'm having fun with it so I'll press on!
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! (2009)
Bit of a change of tact here for the YYYs on their third album. Certainly a more upbeat style of electro-pop which bangs out some cracking tracks including the first single, Zero. Suckers for female lead singers will love this.
Mazzy Star - So that tonight I might see (1993)
Sometimes to move forward, we must first take a step back. So I thought we could dip into the vault for a classic mid-90s indie album. Mazzy Star have an iconic sound which certainly won't give you a pick me up! The album was critically acclaimed and even received some MTV airplay. Fade into you was the most successful track which evidently went on to be used in more TVs shows and films than the band would care to remember, but still cuts pretty deep 15 years later. Not a good one if you've just busted up your relationship!
Catch you in a few weeks.

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition EP (2008)
The Temper Trap have been getting plenty of airplay lately both in Aust and the UK due to there keenly anticipated album which is due out in the middle of the year. The Hildas and I had the pleasure of seeing the boys from Melbs at the Corner Hotel over the Easter weekend. Although we didn't share the same level of enthusiasm for some of their set, we both agreed that they would be one of the biggest hits in 2009.
Sweet Disposition won't disappoint:
Anyway, seeing I deprived my loyal fan base over the last few weeks, we'll get a double shot up and running this week...
Deer Tick - War Elephant (re-released 2009)
So we're going to move on from the indie pop...its fun, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy but really, its fairy floss stuff best left for 16 year old channel V obsessed wanna-be rockstars like Hilda...
Which brings me to Deer Tick who are what you'd probably discribe as an alt-country band, hailing from Rhode Island in the States. These guys have got a great folk sound with a hardened edge thanks to frontman John McCauley's lithe songwritting which gives you the impression that he's a 21 year old with a black lung and bad liver. (Sounds like a few of our 5th XVIII boys right?...)
Art Isn't Real (City of Sin) is a great place to start but I suggest getting into the whole album.
So there we have it for another week. Hopefully something for everyone but if not, your taste stinks.
Go Cards.

16 April 2009
For the first posting on this page it was hard to go past a banging rock band out of Brooklyn whose 4th studio album, Stay Positive, has been on high rotation over summer at my place.
The Hold Steady – Stay Positive (2008) If this is your first introduction to them the first single off the album, Sequestered in Memphis, is a great starting point, particularly if you still think there is a place for the piano in a rock n roll band.
We’ll be crossing the genre divide quite frequently on this page so if this is not to your taste (stiff sh1t….!) stay tuned for next week and we’ll mix it up.
Go Cardinals!
