Okehampton 6 - 4 Tavistock (tries)

posted ‎‎Oct 27, 2009 12:23 AM‎‎ by tobydaniel@fsmail.net

Okehampton and Tavy battled it out over two games in this close fought Derby.  Okehampton won both games, but not without strong opposition from Tavy.

Both sets of players acquitted themselves well with some outstanding individual all round performances, notably coming from Cole Pengelly (3), Harry Laing-Taylor (3), James Stevens (1), Daniel Tomkins (1) and Daniel Wonnacott (1).  Persistent tagging in defence from Okehampton broke down several Tavy attacks, with David Smith, Ben Wharton, Matthew Denning, Dominic Strugnell and Jake Laing-Taylor all being prominent in creating tries for others.

George Cox and James Close again performed well, with some defence splitting breaks, causing Tavy to be put on the back foot, retreating to their own try line.  Great tagging and attacking play from Saul Holliday and Joshua Burgoyne resulted in them both being rewarded with a try each.

Will Cunningham, whilst not scoring a try, put in a very strong display, working hard and supporting his team mates throughout the match, which was a credit to him.

Okehampton now take a two week break, before returning to play Bideford at home on the 15 November.

An outstanding allround performance by the Oke side inflicted the first loss of the season on Launceston.Launceston were well drilled and formidable opponents but Oke stuck to their guns showing great tenacity and drive to win.

The first tries were scored, after great breaks by Charlie Glanville 1,Will Cunningham and Harry Laing-Taylor 1. Cole Pengelley scored a further 2 and Joshua Burgoyne 1, both putting in great battling performances. Great support play by Dominic Strugnell, Liam Daintree, Matthew Denning, James Stevens, Daniel Wonnacott and Ben Wharton ensured Oke retained possession in attack.

James Close and David Smith put in some great tagging work, halting the Launceston attacks. George Cox created havoc in the Launceston defence with some mazy attacking runs. Saul Holliday picked up any loose ball on the floor to turn defence into attack, only being halted short of the Launceston try line by some foul play.

The two outstanding performances of the match came from Jake Laing-Taylor who scored 3 tries and Daniel Tomkins who scored 2 tries. Both players were always supporting others and tagging throughout the match.

The whole team worked hard and showed great spirit throughout.Oke now march onto their next match, heads held high for the local derby against Tavistock.

Okehampton were in no mood to take any prisoners as they crushed Teignmouth, scoring 22 tries. Teignmouth couldn't cope with the fast pace set by Okehampton, who attacked in waves and showed great support for one another.

Excellent teamwork from Liam Daintree, James Close, Dominic Strugnell, Harry Laing-Taylor and Cole Pengelly led to tries for Ben Wharton (2), Charlie Glanville (4), Matthew Denning (2) and Will Cunningham (1).

Okehampton were now scoring at will with little opposition from Teignmouth. Further tries came from Daniel Wonnacott (3), Daniel Tomkins (5) and James Stevens (1). Pressure from the Okehampton defence through George Cox and David Smith forced the Teignmouth players to spill the ball, which was seized upon by Saul Holliday (1) and Joshua Burgoyne (3), who were both quickest to the breakdown, and created counter attacks for Okehampton.

Superb tagging and teamwork were the key elements of Okehampton's win.

Playing their first match of the season, Okehampton started at a fast and furious pace. Good support play led to 2 tries for Will Cunningham and 1 for Joshua Burgoyne. Sidmouth fought back but Okehampton kept up the pressure on the Sidmouth attack with some excellent tagging in defence by Saul Holiday, James Close, Dominic Strugnell and Jake Laing-Taylor.

Great breaks by George Cox, Daniel Wonnacott, James Stevens and Ben Wharton created space for others to score. Strong individual runs by Harry Laing-Taylor and Daniel Tomkins rewarded them with a try each. Charlie Glanville and Cole Pengelly both had good all round games, with Cole scoring 3 tries.

Okehampton are adapting to the new passing rules this season and acquitted themselves well throughout the match. After the cobwebs of last season were blown off, they showed some great skill in attack and defence. This was shown none more so than in the ever improving Liam Daintree, who carried out some outstanding tagging to break down the Sidmouth attacks. An excellent result with some great teamwork.

A big thank you from all the players, coaches, back up team and parents, go to the Buffs Club, who kindly donated £300 to the ORFC Junior Section Chairman, Rob Curtis, prior to the match.
