Crediton 5 - 45 Okehampton

posted ‎‎Nov 1, 2009 11:15 PM‎‎ by tobydaniel@fsmail.net

The young Okes visited Crediton for the first fixture between these 2 sides on Sunday and not only maintained their unbeaten start to the season but also managed convincing victories in both games.

The main match saw Okehampton triumph 45-5 whilst in the 2nd game they were victorious to the tune of 25-0. There were good performances from Joel Tancock, playing his 1st season of rugby, who had a number of barnstorming runs up the flanks and Corey Holliday who showed good awareness at scrum-half in making a number of sniping runs before off-loading the ball.

Tries were scored by Jack Ogbourne (5), Leon Horn (3), Gregory Daniel (2), Ollie Arden (2), Adam Mortimore and a maiden try for Nyassa Binijewel, who showed the opposition a clean pair of heels to glide up the wing from 30 metres out.

Okehampton 30 - 15 Tavistock

Instead of the usual two match Sunday morning routine. Oke played near neighbours Tavistock in one, elongated match involving numerous rolling substitutions. This caused the match to be a fractured, disrupted affair.

Oke went on to win reasonably comfortably to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Tries were scored by Leon Horne (3), Gregory Daniel, Simon Moody and a fine persistent individual effort from Ollie Ardon. All squad members played their part in the victory.

Next week see the unbeaten Okes take on another near rivals Crediton, away from home.

Okehampton 15 - 15 Launceston

A tough fixture this week against local rivals Launceston. A very competitive match started badly for the Okes as some useful rucking and driving enabled the visitors to forge ahead with two tries for an early ten point lead.

Oke started to gain confidence after some strong running with Adam Wonnacott at the forefront of many forward rumbles. The hosts reduced the deficit with a score from the prolific Leon Horne which was followed by a typically powerful effort from Gregory Daniel which left the scores tied at the interval.

With the Oke front three consistently driving the opposition off the ball at scrum time, Oke had more possession and territory in the second period. It was unfortunate though that Launceston scored with virtually their only visit to Oke’s half to regain the initiative. Oke were not done though and got the draw they deserved when the terrier like Simon Moody burrowed over for the equalising score. A draw was ultimately a fair reflection of the overall match and the under 10s remain undefeated this season.

In the second match all squad members were given a run out and the Cornish visitors came out on top by twenty points to five. Newcomer Joel Tancock was named man of the match and Leon Horne crossed for Oke’s solitary try.

On a warm, sunny morning in Teignmouth the Under 10s recorded their 2nd win of the season to maintain their perfect start to the year.

From the start they always looked to be the stronger of the 2 sides and despite missing a number of regulars they soon found their feet and began to ruck and maul with true purpose. After clean possession was won a flowing move saw the ball moved nicely through the hands for Edward McCarthy to be put away on the wing to score the opening try.

Unfortunately, after this the game became more fragmented and the Okehampton rucking a little less purposeful. However, tries were scored at regular intervals with the scorers being Leon Horn, Ollie Arden, Alfie Gillespie and Gregory Daniel.

The defence was excellent with a much higher tackle count than normal with important contibutions coming from Adam Mortimore and Jack Ogbourne.

Next week the side face stiff opposition in local rivals Launceston.

Okehampton 15 - 0 Sidmouth

Oke ‘s first match of the season is always a tough one as they meet rivals Sidmouth who have in the past proved a stern test at this age group. Coach Graham Horne now has a plethora of players to select from after many new recruits have joined the side.

The season got off to a very promising start as the u10s came out on top at the end of a physical game full of commitment and effort. Okes won by three tries to nil with strong running efforts from Leon Horn, Adam Mortimore and Gregory Daniel.

Competition for places should help this side progress even further as they look to have another highly successful season.

In the second game of the morning Oke fielded a completely different side and all the debutants impressed as Oke came home 15-5 winners. Excellent tries were scored by Kieran Coyle, Joseph Stratton and Jack Ogbourne.
