Teams

Season 09/10‎ > ‎

Second XV

After successive promotions the side now finds itself in Devon Merit Table 1. This will provide a huge challenge to all those involved but is a measure of how far the squad have developed over the past 3 seasons. The rump of last season's side is still together and with a number of former Colts moving up to bolster the squad it is certain that the challenge will be met head-on.

Sion Taylor is joined by club stalwart Adam Curtis in managing the side and with a large number of players to select from, it is hoped that the team will once again do the club proud. The side is captained again by the more than able Simon Griffiths.

League games in Bold

Crediton 5 - 38 Okehampton

posted ‎‎Nov 16, 2009 4:55 AM‎‎ by tobydaniel@fsmail.net

With the weather as it was for the game to be on was unexpected, but apart for the gusting wind and having difflyculty recognizing which side was which due to their red complexions come the end, it turned out to be a good game of rugby. Okey 2s choosing to play up the slope against the wind had their work cut out but after some good forward driving play the 2s were 1st on the score board with Simon Bennett impressive again powering over for an unconverted try. Crediton replied with a unconverted try before James Bird caught the ball deep in his own half and rounded a few defenders before slipping the ball inside to Richie Friend to score an excellent try Kev Dennis converting. This was half time and now playing down the slope with the wind in their backs should have been on top but the 2s took their time getting use to playing with the wind until after 20 minutes Pete Herrod-Taylor broke through the Crediton defence after a text book training ground move with Simon Griffiths on hand as ever to ceremoniously dive over for a try, Kev Dennis converting. The 2s now had the measure of the wind and their opponents and the tries followed, with Matt Dennis, Richard Drake and Luke Honeychurch all scoring and Kev Dennis converting two, to round out winners at 38 points to 5. This was another exceptional performance considering the conditions and leaves the super 2s marching on to next week which is Paignton 2s at home.

Okehampton 20 - 13 Barnstaple

A blustery wet day at Oaklands saw Okehampton 2nd’s take on Barnstaple 2nd’s in a top of the league clash. The Barnstaple side had won the Devon senior merit table for the past 2 years – so the home side knew they would be in for a tough afternoon.

But it was Okehampton who started the stronger, dominating the set piece with youngster Richard Mortimer soon getting the upper hand in the scrums. The scoring opened with a powerful run by Pete Herod-Taylor, up the right touchline, breaking several tackles before going in the corner to score an unconverted try.

The home side then had a moment of weakness, as immediately from the kick off and after good handling, Barum where awarded a penalty and a quick tap penalty by their No9 saw them score in front of the club house.

The Okey 2’s still had their tails up and after some good territorial pressure were awarded a penalty with Buzz Brimacombe converting. Playing up the hill, Barum were trying to run the ball from deep and it was Pete Herod-Taylor who intercepted a pass and pirouetted through several would be tacklers to score his 2nd try. Buzz converting. Barum fought back well and managed to kick a penalty to end the half 15-8.

The second half saw Okey 2’s play up the slope and with the rain coming down they spent alot of time in their own half but managed to break out and after prolonged pressure on the Barum line, man of the match, Simon Bennett powered over for a well deserved try, conversion missed.

Barum did not give up and after some good phases managed to cross the line for an unconverted try, but the Super 2’s held out to the final whistle and rounded off another excellent performance to win 20 -13. Next week away to Crediton 2nd’s.

Okehampton 43 - 7 Tiverton

Playing up the slope against the breeze the 2s needed to start well, and after some good interpassing Richard Drake pirouetted off the side of a ruck to score an unconverted try . Then within minutes the super 2s put together the best passage of play of the day when Ben Wollens in his own words `shockingly falling over his own feet` inches from the line only for the 2s to recycle and Phil Harding `not to be outdone by his second row partner `crashing over for a try, Buzz Brimacombe converting. The 2s now took their foot off the gas and allowed Tiverton 2nds to get back in the game and after several phases near the home sides line, Tiverton crossed for a converted try.Half time came and the 2s knew they needed to up their game and minutes off the start Richard Drake bagged his second try, Buzz converting. The 2s were looking to move the ball wide where poss and from a play inside their own half Pete Herold-Taylor powered through a gap to run from his own half for a try, Buzz converting again. With the rain now coming down and the errors increasing partly due to losing most of the best match balls over the fence, the standard of rugby dropped a bit, but the 2s still managed 3 more tries. The 1st by Steve Alford to improve his chances of 1st team rugby, the other 2 by `the outstanding again` Richie Friend who was determined to take as much contact as he could to score, Buzz converting one. This is another good win to make it 3 wins out 4, next week sees the super 2s away to Newton Abbot.

Torquay 12 - 17 Okehampton

After three games, two won one lost this is a better start than could be expected. The first was a great fight back to come from two tries down to win well against a strong Crediton 2nds side, then came Exmouth 2nds probably one of the top sides in the league, but the young Okey 2`s side fronted up well and apart from a 15 minute spell in the second half were always in the game, Exmouth 2nds ran out convincing winners but a good lesson was learned by the 2`s. The 3rd game and 1st away was against Torquay 2nds on a hot sunny day was going to be real test, after 25 minutes the 2`s were 2 tries down , but they showed some real heart and fought back well and after a break from Rob Fishleigh the pack drove over for a try Phil Harding touching down for a unconverted try. Half time saw a few positional changes saw the 2`s pick up the pace of the game and after some good phases of play Simon Cox found some space on the blind side to polish of a good attack with a unconverted try. Torquay fought back well but with the last move of the game Phil Harding was high tackled and from the resulting penalty quick thinking from Rob Fishleigh saw Torquays defence wasn`t at home and nipped in the corner for a try which was converted by Carl Poynton which saw the super 2`s win and collect a good scalp on the way.
