Okehampton RFC is 125!

Welcome to the new season at Okehampton RFC. It will not be an ordinary season by any stretch of the imagination as season 2009/10 sees the club celebrating its 125th anniversary having been formed in 1884. In recognition of this an energetic programme of events has been planned (see '125 Events' tab) which includes a 1st Match dinner on 14 January 2010 with Gareth Chilcott as guest speaker and a beer festival from 29 October 2009 to 31 October 2009. In addition to the events, a range of anniversary memorabilia is also available for purchase including shirts, ties and glassware. For further details please contact either Max Turner on 07863 356044 or Paul Ankcorn on 01837 851611.

Following the extensive refurbishment work carried out on the clubhouse, kitchens and showers last summer we witnessed the benefits throughout last season, not only with the positive comments of those who used the facilities but also in terms of the levels of bar turnover and booking fees which reached record levels by some considerable margin. If you are interested in using our facilities please contact Sylvia Langan on 07798 921966 or just come along on a match day to have a look for yourself.

This summer attention has been given to the pitches and the outside of the club. Nearly £12,000 has been spent on improving the drainage to the pitches as well as re-seeding and dressing them in an effort to provide a top-class playing surface all year round. New coats of paint have also been applied to the grandstand and posts to give the club an external appearance to match its interior.

The club is always delighted to welcome new players of any age or ability. Training currently takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, meeting at the club at 7:00 pm. If you are interested in joining us please either just come along or alternatively contact one of the team managers. Full contact details are shown under the relevant 'teams' tab.

Season 2009/10
We go into the new season secure in the knowledge that 2008/9 was the most successful in the entire history of the club. The 1st XV won promotion to Western Counties (West), finishing as runners-up behind Penryn. In a thrilling end to the season we needed a huge victory away at Falmouth coupled with a home win at Crediton who were hosting Penryn for us to finish as champions. Despite an emphatic 76-0 win in Cornwall, Crediton were beaten by Penryn thereby securing the title. It was however, a fantastic year for the Chiefs who played some thrilling rugby which we hope to see again this year.

The 2nd XV arguably surpassed all other sides in the club by finishing as champions of their merit table for the second year running and so achieving back to back promotions. They will now be playing in Devon Merit Table 1 against the 2nd teams of the likes of Barnstaple, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Brixham. This will provide a very stiff challenge but one that is relished by each member of the squad.

The Colts also had a hugely successful 2008/9 finishing as runners-up in their Merit table and losing out in the semi-final of the cup to Exeter Chiefs in a close and hard-fought encounter at Sandy Park. This season will possibly be one of transition as several of last season’s squad have now moved on to senior rugby and will hope to make their mark within the 1st or 2nd XVs.

The club will also be running a regular 3rd XV this season, also in a Merit table, albeit on a more social and less-demanding level. All the teams will be looking for more success on the field this year, so please come along and support the club during the upcoming season.
All rugby at home has been cancelled this weekend - 14/15 November due to the weather
