Re-Caps

Tues Dec 1
We played our best basketball game thus far into the season tonight against Grady, fighting to the end.  Our shots weren't falling, but I'm confident that they will as long as we keep finding good ones.  The 1/2-court traps gave us a little trouble to start, but the girls did a good job of making adjustments from the coach as well as figuring out what works and what doesn't as they played.  We will do a small film study as a team to see where the open girls are on the court then work on continuing to execute the offense better and better each week, each quarter, and each possession.  Allison Hancock played in her 1st game today, finding a bucket and shaking the rust off.  Tacia Zepeda lead the team in scoring, doing a good job adjusting and playing through foul trouble.  Diane Resendez and Tiffany Ramirez got in the gaps and seams of the zone for nice shots and put-back points.  We got into our fast-break much better, and will work on transitioning into good 1/2-court offensive principals as we head to the Cotton Center Tournament beginning at 6:30pm Thursday.
Mon Nov 23
The Lady Eagles played their best basketball game so far this season, though our shots weren't falling.  The big post from Ralls came into this game averaging almost 20 points, and we held her to a mere 6.  Our post core increased their statistical index rating by a total of 24.5 between the 4 of them.  Gabriella Osorio played in the JV tournament over the weekend, then came out and earned her first varsity team award as "Playmaker" in leading the team in assists.  Tiffany Ramirez had a career high in scoring and also lead the team in rebounds to become "Chairman of the Boards."  Stephanie Jaime forced 9 turn-overs from the Lady Rabbits earning "Master Thief."  We'll see how well our guards can do on the quick driving point-guard and outside shooters from the Crosbyton crew tonight: JV 4pm and Varstiy 6:30.  Keys will be fighting through screens, recovering to contest shots, and executing offensive principals.  I am confident that tonight our shooting will be on.

Fri Nov 20
Our offense finally got going 2nd half, scoring 8 points in both the 3rd and 4th quarters.  We finally calmed down and executed our spacing and fundamentals much better.  Tacia knocked down 2 from beyond the arc, and our posts got on the offensive boards to earn put-backs and draw fouls.  Defensively, size beat us Friday night in Whiteface.  Their posts were able to turn & score consistently, as well as guards on drives, even when we stepped to help.  We will work harder to front and help on the posts and attack on help to prevent inside looks.

Tues Nov 17
We did a much better job getting back on defense at Klondike, but struggled defending the posts and blocking out.  Tacia lead the team with 9 points, and Crystal got into double digits pulling boards.  Sulema found 5 steals.  Check-out the stats page for more.  When we secured the ball, the offense executed well, but sloppy turn-overs creeped in 39 times.  Basketball theorists agree that, assuming 50% shooting, each 1 turn-over accounts for a 2 point differential, because it both takes a scoring opportunity away from us and gives it to the other team.  The means a 39 point differential that we spotted the opponents.    The positive side of beating ourselves is that it's within our power to fix the problems.  We will be working to do so, then preparing to go hard at Whiteface Friday night.

Tues Nov 10
We had a great start against the Sands Lady Mustangs, but our team scoring dried up at half-time and we didn't get it going from there.  When our presses, 1/2-court traps, and man defenses had time to set-up, they looked good and caused several turn-overs, but our transition defense was a step behind too many times, causing uncontested buckets, fouls, and missed block-outs.  We executed pieces of our offenses well, but didn't quite get it all together at the same time.  Skylar Mills lead the scoring with 7 before going out injured at the end of the 2nd quarter.  Kaimi Williams got on the board with 4 points, while Stephanie Jaime and Tiffany Ramirez each hit 2 for 2 from the line. Somer Seely lead the JV scoring with 6 points, Shandye Proctor earned 4, and Brittany Jonas had a 2.  The positive outlook from this is that we can fix a few small yet key defensive elements and stop a majority of the opponent scoring, and we have several offensive fundamentals we'll work to fix this week to be ready to travel to Klondike on Tuesday.

Tues Nov 3

We had a much improved team effort last night in Dawson, as we played a 3-way scrimmage with them and Amherst.  Our execution of our team-oriented offenses spread the scoring out among new players.  Skylar Mills and Tacia Zepeda again earned 11 points each, both driving for inside buckets and free throws as well as knocking down shots from behind the arc.  Seniors Stephanie Jaime and Diane Resendez emerged as scoring threats, find 8 points each.  Posts Crystal Barrera and Tiffany Ramirez each earned a bucket as well.  Down by 2 with 5 seconds running at the end of the last quarter against Amherst, we executed our fast-break to perfection, to tie the game at the buzzer.  Our press and press breaker still need some work, as well as our ability to stay in good athletic stance through-out the game.  Back to the basics - we will focus the remainder of this week on fundamentals, then will use Monday to get our offenses and defenses well-oiled for our opener on the road to Sands Tues Nov 10.

Sat Oct 31
The Lady Eagles had a successful first showing Saturday, beating the Dawson Lady Dragons but dropping one to the Petersburg Lady Buffs.  Skylar Mills and Tacia Zepeda lead the team in scoring with 11 points each.  Skylar started with a big hit from the arc, then continuously drove for 2 inside buckets and 4 free ones during trips to the line.  Tacia came out with a hot hand, finding 3 big buckets early on from behind the arc, along with one nice pull-up jumper later in the day.  Kaimi Williams, Tiffany Ramirez, and Gabi Osorio also earned a bucket each.

We missed the presence of 3 posts: Diane Resendez, Crystal Barrera, and Allison Hancock, but should gain 2 of them back as we travel to Dawson to play a 3-way with Amherst beginning at 5pm Tues Nov 3rd.  We will focus today on fixing the X and O’s from Saturday to have better spacing and floor balance along with more rebounding opportunities, as well as move some personnel to have better success for and against a press, then will work our offensive and defensive fundamentals for the remainder of the week.  We open on the road Tues Nov 10th at Sands.

Quick reminder: the varsity cross-country will perform this Saturday in Lubbock at the Regional Cross-Country Meet.
