Update August 2009-Looking Back on 08-09

The 2008-09 year was excellent at LHS for science- we have more students than ever taking science classes as electives which is excellent- here is a quick recap of the neat things happening at LHS!

  • LHS housed it's first ever Honors Biology Science Exhibition showcasing year long individual student research projects.  It was totally amazing to see the neat work presenting by these bright young minds!
  • 2009-2010 will see AP chemistry added to our course list taught by Mr. Russell.
  • The Science Olympiad team won 13 medals at the state competition including 1st and 3rd places in Egg-O-naut!  Go Team!
  • Science students got involved in service learning projects taking on the school wide paper recycling program, (they recycled over 5,000 lbs of paper this year!)
  • Two students in the field ecology class volunteered to build an outdoor classroom with benches and a sign to be used by students working on field studies in the woods behind the school.  Other students helped set up the classroom and clean up the litter in the area to make a nice new space to use in outdoor learning!
  • The marine biology classes starting an Atlantic Salmon Rearing Program where they raised 200 eggs to fry in the classroom and then taught the entire 6th grade Sugg middle school class about Salmon life cycle and water quality both in the classroom and at two field day events at the little river.  Both the Lisbon Reporter and the Lisbon Ledger Covered this event in the press as well as Channel 8 news!

In addition- stay tuned for a Salmon Project Web Page to be created by students in the 09-2010 school year! (check out the images of the release and watch the eggs grow with a webcam.)

Update June 2009

Update August 2007

The members of the LHS Science Department have been busy lately!  Along with their regular teaching duties members of the department have been working hard on improving the LHS Science Curriculum and attending confernces to broaden their knowledge.  This summer almost the entire department attended a Maine Tree Foundation sponsored "Teacher Tree Tour".  The purpose of this great 4 day conference is to further teacher's knowledge of Maine's Forest Products Industry.  This conference also familiarizes teachers with the Project Learning Tree curriculum.  This offers experiential methods for teaching forestry in today's classrooms.  We all had a great learning experience at this conference.  In addtion, Jill Denniston and Olivia Griset attended an earlier PLT confernce and had an article about the confernce published... to check out this article click on the following link...PLT LHS Article   (look on pg. 2)
