Another case is my own.  I had cataract surgery here, and the doctor was every bit as good as any I have used in the states.  His office is world class with the best up to date equipment.  I have a lot to compare it to, as all of my life I have had special needs for my eyes.  At one time I was a patient at the world famous Center for the Partially Sighted in Santa Monica, CA, and I can tell you that the ophthalmologist's office, level of treatment, etc. here is just as good as what I have received from the best of the best in the US.

Another plus here is that you often get more personalized attention here from the doctors than you do in the US.  Instead of the doctor making a "cameo appearance" after his nurse has done all of the real examination of you, the doctors here generally take their time, sometimes spending a half hour to an hour with you so that they completely understand your case, and you, and make sure that you understand what you have to do.  And most of these top level doctors speak excellent English, and, often times, have even graduated from a US medical school.

Yet, despite the much higher rates they could charge in the US, these doctors CHOOSE to come back to Costa Rica to practice medicine for a fraction of the money they would get back home!  This shows not only how much they love Costa Rica, but how truly dedicated they are to their profession.  Doctors here as a rule actually CARE about their patients.  You aren't just another number to them or an insurance claim form!

Another important kind of surgery that people come to Costa Rica for is cosmetic surgery.  This has become a pretty big industry here, but, again, you can get a world class nose job for pennies on the dollar!
