GeneralIs Turning Point Learning Center a public or a private school?TPLC is a public school, part of USD253 and funded as other public schools in Kansas are. There is no tuition charged for attending the school (see below). Is there a special tuition charged for students who attend? No, there is no tuition charged for attending TPLC. However, as with all other USD 253 schools, there is a yearly textbook and activities fee charged. For $95, students are assigned the use of a Macintosh notebook computer and charger to be used in their studies for the year, as well as being able to participate in various activities through the school year. Do students at TPLC take state assessements? Yes, and TPLC was recognized with eight Standard of Excellence awards for both Reading and Math in 2007, more than any other school in Emporia. Is TPLC a school for "special" students? We serve students who come from various levels of the educational spectrum. The one requirement that will ensure that your child is successful is a "can-do" and attitude willing to learn. We feel that all students are special, but that being said, at this time, we are not equipped to meet all needs of students who are served by some special education services. If you're not sure, please contact a staff member for more details regarding your child's situation. Where is the school located? The physical school is located at 315 South Market Street, Emporia, Kansas. Both the Virtual Program and the f2f Program are headquartered there. What does it mean to be a "charter school?" Visit the Kansas State Department of Education's Charter School Page From the KSDE website: School Restructuring requires new paradigms, new models and approaches, new ways of thinking, and new educational choices. Restructuring efforts in Kansas are based on the premise that all children can learn, that learning should be a lifelong opportunity, and that properly educated citizens will directly impact on the economy of our State and our country as a whole. f2f ProgramWhat age levels does the face2face program serve?Grades 5-8 Do students who attend the f2f program have to come to the school every day? Since we have an emphasis in Project Based Learning and group collaborations, students are expected to attend class every day. If, in the case of family vacation, however, students do still have access to their work via video conferencing, as long as they have internet connection at that vacation spot. How do we apply to have our child attend? Click here for more information. We may be interested, but can I and/or my child just come visit for a day to see what it's like? Yes, it is highly encouraged for you and your child to come not only to an Open House we have scheduled in the Spring, but also to actually visit the school while we're in session. It's important to see how we interact with one another and with the academic content. Just email or call Ginger Lewman for an appointment. Can TPLC students still participate in sports or QUEST activities at EMS/LNIS/LSIS? Yes. Parents will need to make arrangements with the hosting school. Also, the schedule may not exactly mirror the other school's, but if this is the desire of the student/family, arrangements can usually be made. What are your school daily hours? For school year 2008-2009, we begin school at 8:45am and end at 4pm. Families are welcome to set up a personalized schedule of drop-off/pick-up based on family schedule. Often, many students arrive up to an hour early or stay up to an hour late. Do you use Macs, Windows, or Linux systems? Students and staff use MacBooks for the great majority of our work, but do employ other platforms for special projects. Do students take their notebook computers home with them? Yes. There is homework to be done each night and students often use their computers to work.
