Welcome to Orem Elementary's Computer Class Website

Orem Elementary School

At Orem Elementary, students explore the wonderful world of computers in a safe and friendly environment!  The class is taught by Mrs. Smith and covers many useful topics relating to technology.  We also practice a variety of valuable computer skills.
 
The 5th and 6th grade students are just beginning the first semester in computer class.  We began the year by going over class rules and care of computers.  We also did our first paint project using a program called TuxPaint.  We have begun and will do keyboarding practice throughout the trimester and we just completed our first learning unit on computer hardware.   We have also covered Internet safety and copyright laws, and in our next unit we will focus on how technology is changing our society.  This unit will include a student created PowerPoint Presentation and a Persuasive Essay created on MS Word.


Some other learning units that we will do in computers for the 5th and 6th grade students include: Internet Research on the History of Technology, Garageband Music Creation, Geography Research on Pioneer Online Library's Culture Grams which will include some exploration on Google Earth, an iWeb/Blog Project (which will NOT be published to the web), a Mighty Authors Book Creation Project, a Scratch Programming Project, an Excel Chart Creation Activity, and an iPhoto Digital Photo Story Activity.  As you can see we will be very busy this Semester.


 Please get your Internet Permission Forms and Disclosure Documents turned in as soon as possible.  District policy prohibits student use of the Internet without these signed forms.  Also, please be assured that we not only teach safe Internet practices, but that we do everything within our power to reduce and eliminate exposure to any inappropriate web content.  The district has a great filtering system in place and all student classroom work is carefully monitored by the teacher using a program called Remote Desktop which allows the teacher to see what is happening on all computers, at all times during class.
