Please read the syllabus below. The syllabus contains information about the class including grading and assignment types. There are also other important class forms posted below. Please note whether you are in Honors or Regular Oceanography, there are several differences in the courses.
 
 

 

Honors Oceanography Syllabus

 

Welcome to Oceanography! In this course we will be studying a broad spectrum of all things dealing with the ocean.  This course will require a lot of time and effort on your part in order to get the most out of the class.  There will be reading requirements, internet activities, weekend field trips, as well as all in class activities.

Course Topics: Major topics this class will cover include but are not limited to; marine biology, marine geology, physical oceanography, and marine technology. 

 

Assignment types:

  • I-Search (mini research) (will be graded on a 4pt scale A=4=100, B=3=90, C=2=80, D=1=70)
  • Quizzes
  • Tests (extra credit questions are built into the test.)
  • Daily assignments and labs (to be turned in periodically in your folder)
  • Presentations (will be graded on a 4pt scale A=4=100, B=3=90, C=2=80, D=1=70)
  • Blogging (will be graded on the percentage of blogs completed, ex. 4 out of 5 completed = 80%)
  • Journals (will be graded on the percentage of entries completed, ex. 4 out of 5 completed = 80%) Journals are field experiences related to Ocean Science, they are to be completed on your own time.  Class trips do not count. Experiences must occur during the course of the current semester.  Entries will be posted on the blog site.  Each entry should include the date, location, time, persons involved, and your thoughts on the activity.

 

Grading Policy:

  • 15% - Folders
  • 40% - Exams (Tests & Quizzes)
  • 10% - Journals & Blogs (5 due by the end of the first 9 weeks, 5 dues by the start of exams)
  • 35% - Projects (includes I-Search, Tanks, Presentations)

 

Grading Scale:  100-93 = A              92-85 = B               84-77 = C            76-70 = D               below 70 = F

 

LATE WORK/ Missing Work: All make up work must be submitted the first Tuesday following the assignment due date. Any one who needs tutoring or help after school, I will make myself available upon request. 

 

Final Exam:

 

All students will be required to take a comprehensive final exam at the end of the course.  The school exam exemption policy is in effect for this course.  A = 3 or fewer days absent, B = 2 or fewer days absent, C = 1 or fewer days absent.  2 tardies = 1 absent for exemption purposes.

 

 

Class Policies:

  • IDs must be visible to enter class
  • No Phones out during class time. I will take them and only return to a parent or administrator.
  • Use good common sense
  • Respect self, others, and environment
  • Follow safety contract
  • Put forth best effort everyday
  • The classroom will remain clean and organized at all times.
  • Please do not bring large book bags into the room.
