There are several types of teams in competitive Irish Dancing and they are CEILI, FIGURE CHOREOGRAPHY, and SHOW. A dancer only has a complete and rounded training in Irish Dance, if they dance all three in addition to solo dancing.
Ceili is a traditional dance with its figures and movements having been passed on from generation to generation. Irish Dance teachers must teach these dances exactly as they are given to us. An embellishment is a travesity. Correct and proper teaching, learning and training is a must. These dances can be generally split into two sections; Social dances and the dances used in the competitive sphere. The former are generally circle or line dances with movements which are repeated again and again. They are great fun and fabulous exercise! These are the dances which are taught in the Just for Fun courses and the Senior Movement courses. For competitive purposes we use the 8-person teams that generally start in a square formation. Intricate formations and movements, which weave in and out according to set steps and order are perfected and polished. Ceili teams at competition are grouped by age: under 12, under 17, under 30 and senior (over 30).
We are the 2011 World Champions in this category in the Under 12 and Under 17 age groups. Our Under 12s are also the current European and German Champions in this discipline. Our U17s, our U30s and O30s currently hold the German Runner-up title.

Figure Choreography is a team of up to 16 dancers who perform an originally choreographed Irish dancing choreography to Irish music. Teachers can use their creative ideas to choreograph but must keep within certain parameters ensuring that the character of Irish Dance is not lost. Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig has been particularly successful at competitions in this category, in 2009 winning 1st place at the WIDA World Championships for their Under 17 Figure - The Claddagh and 2nd place at the same competition for their Over 17 Figure dance - Threeness. In 2010 the Under 17s came in as Runners up in this category at the World Championships with their rendition of Threeness. The Claddagh prevailed again in 2011 winning the Over 17 Title at the World Championships in Berlin. We have been German Champions in this discipline since 2007.

Show Dance Choreography is an original 6-minute choreography using Irish dance steps but any music. Our show dance team came in 2nd place at the WIDA World Championships in 2009 for their 'Break Free' routine. Our Show - The Claddagh Remix won the World Championships in 2010. In 2011 we decided to choreograph and register 2 Show dances at the World Championships 2011. Our Routine "The Journey" containing our predominately 15+ dancers came in at a fabulous 3rd place and our "Circus" - a riproaring, energetic show - completely with children came in at a fantastic 4th place beating strong adult opposition.
