What a great weekend. On to the WORLDS... CONGRATULATIONS, VICTORIA! Victoria Reier, our teacher-in-training, has successfully passed the 2nd and 3rd parts of her TMRF and the 1st part of her TCRG certifications! Almost there...! Festival der jungen Talente: Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig was one of 8 acts who won a chance to compete in Altdorf's FESTIVAL DER JUNGEN TALENTE on 8 May, 2010 in the Festhalle Altdorf. Altdorf and the surroundings showed that they had no lack of quality talent, from a young saxophonist with great tonality to a very cool breakdance group and quality entertainment throughout all eight acts. We would like to say we won first place, but that went deservedly to a very quick-witted improvisational theater group. No other places were announced but, as we say here at O'Brannlaig, everyone truly was a winner. And, given the 'prize' money we received, we think we must have placed fairly well... Ceili Abend Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig had its first Ceili Abend on Friday, April 23rd from 19.30 to 22.00. An enthusiastic and active crowd turned out, enjoyed Guinness and Kilkenny beers and watched a sampling of our dancing besides getting themselves a bit of exercising dancing The Siege of Ennis and The Walls of Limerick. A good time was had by all and we plan to have our next Ceili Abend soon! The 5. European and the 2. World Championships The WIDA 2010 Championships were held in warm Benelmadena, Spain and Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig, with a delegation of 31 dancers and 6 teams equaled their number of team trophies from the previous year! We brought home a proud SIX trophies, plus had some amazing successes in the solo competitions. Stuttgart Feis This year the Stuttgart Feis was headed by the new 'verein' "Irish-Dance in Sindelfingen e.V." and it was every bit as successful as all of the previous ones. Despite unpleasant snowy road conditions, most competitors arrived without problem and dancing was delayed only a short while, long enough to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and a piece of cake from the lovely offerings on sale. Over 150 competitors danced and well over 100 others were in attendance, cheering on all those who braved the weather. A 'Tombola' (raffle) provided an assortment of Irish paraphernalia, homemade goodies, books, toys and more for our visitors to try their luck at winning. A good day was had by all! Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig Open House (Tag der offene Tür) We hosted our Open House this year on Saturday, February 20th, introducing our many visitors to Irish dancing, both solo and team, a la O'Brannlaig! Visitors got to tour our capacious studio, admire our many trophies, smile at the self-assurance of even our youngest dancers and marvel at the intricacies of ceili dances and the swift legwork of our open dancers in their hard shoes. With sekt, beverages, cake and sandwiches to provide sustenance, our visitors left satisfied in all aspects! Yes, the bold move to a spacious new dancing home all for ourselves is underway! On January 2 and 3 we'll have the big Paint, Refurbish and Move In days where we'd like all dancers and parents to help out. Please dress appropriately and bring along paint brushes and rollers. Janice will have these at practice on Thursday night (Dec. 17) and on Saturday (Dec. 19). We have not made a set fee for these, but we would like a donation (which will cover the cost of purchasing the photos in bulk from Tony Maher (www.tonyfoto.de), the professional photographer and supplies for our new studio, among other things). The 3. WIDA German Championships Exhausting, but OH, SO SUPER! Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig is now the proud owner of 4 German championship titles in Ceili under 17, Figure Choreography under 17, Figure Choreography over 17 and Show Dance. We also took 2nd place in Ceili under 12 and Ceili under 30. Plus we had four dancers (Kaja, Franzi, Sophie and Michelle) receive trophies and sashes for the Open championships! WIDA British Open Four of our dancers attended the British Open on Saturday, 24 October in Stratford-upon-Avon. Anastasia, Michelle and Sophie won second place in the 3-hand, then they teamed up with Emily to win second place in the 4-hand, Emily came in THIRD in the Under 16 Open Championship and Sophie came in fifth in the Under 18 Open Championship. Congratulations, girls, and well done qualifying a few more teams for the Europeans in 2010! *** The 4. WIDA Nürnberg Feis A large group of O'Brannlaig dancers boarded a bus in Gärtringen at 5:30 a.m. for the 2+ hour drive to Nürnberg on Saturday, October 3rd for the WIDA feis there. With over 30 solo dancers and multiple figures teams, O'Brannlaig was on the podium left and right! Our dancers learned lots of super new Irish dancing and cool hip hop moves from Dierdre and Laszlo during the beautiful week of September 7-12. Everyone worked hard, got along great and were well provided for, thanks to the various moms that helped with providing the meals. On to the competitions....we're ready! *** CRDM ALL IRELANDS 2009 Shortly after the 2009 WIDA Europeans and Worlds, Scoil Rince O'Brannlaig dancers competed at the CRDM All Ireland Competition in Dublin on the weekend of 24, 25 and 26 July. We had 17 dancers compete in the solo competitions with 8 at the highest level. We are happy to report the 7th place finish of Emily in the Under 16 age group! We were also very glad to pull together an Under-15 ceili team at the last minute which, thanks to the good regular practice by the girls, resulted in a very joyous THIRD place finish! Way to go, girls -- you're the first of our teams to qualify for the 2010 World Championships! C Well done Anastasia, Elina, Emily, Franzi, Ilona, Jenni, Katja and Michelle!!
