On the Strike:
Why the “Future Labour” Class Should Support the AUFA
From the desk of the Objective Sociologist
The Board of Governors have more than enough money to fund all of the AUFA’s demands for equity, equality, and fairness. AUFA's demand for to increase salary for faculty and non-faculty union members is an attempt to keep AUFA's salaries on pace with regional and national increases . Their demand for an increase in the number of professors will improve the teacher:student ratio and create more variety of classes students can choose from. The administration of Acadia could settle this dispute without having to raise tuition. It's hard to discern the true amount of wealth that the administration wields. The tendency of our school and our society to keep it's spending habits obscure makes it very difficult for the public to keep an eye on where all this money goes. Administration, please prove to all of us it is not being hidden and literally show us the money ---- Since these funds may well be available to meet AUFA's needs then it seems untrue that raising our tuition. Acadia's administration may be spreading this message as a bargaining tactic - they seek to separate the students from supporting the faculty and we will not fall for this juvenile bait As students we must realize the members of the AUFA occupy a place in society where many of us will end up in a few very short years – the labour force - selling ourselves for a good wage. By not supporting them now we are not only harming our education but also our potential future selves. In a few years time most of us will be right where the faculty and non-faculty members of the AUFA are right now; maybe not in the same industry, but somewhere within the juggernaut of industry nonetheless. At that time we will want the same thing the faculty and non-faculty members of the AUFA want right now: a fairer distribution of the wealth we helped to generate. Seeking a more fair distribution of wealth throughout the workplace and supporting people seeking a fair wage price for their labour is the right thing to do. Do so because one day it will be you !
If you take anything from
university this year, learn this: One
should always make demands for more equity and for more equality. We need critical thought and strong action to force Acadia's Administration’s hand. We need to see transparency in negotiations and disclosure of why tuition raises are necessary in their eyes. We are the future labour force and current students of Acadia University and we must all side with the AUFA. We need the administration to come clean and stop using scare tactics as bargaining tools. We have intelligence, creativity and sheer numbers. It is our money that makes this school go round. If our words are not heard, we will consider withdrawing from Acadia University before the course drop date in November. ASWM doesn't want this to happen. We want a resolution before this is necessary We are big, we are strong and we will do what it takes to realize a better future for us all. acadiastudentwithdrawalmovement@hotmail.com Support the AUFA. Support the Acadia Student Withdrawal Movement (ASWM). On Facebook you’ll find information on where both sides in the dispute stand. We welcome all critical analysis of the dispute and the movement. Join us, watch us grow in number and we can decide together what to do to save ourselves.
The blank withdrawal document is online at http://www.acadiau.ca/registrar/forms/Withdrawal.pdf) Fill it out and bring it to the Student Affairs office, but ignore the location of the office on the withdrawal document listed in the first instruction. The process to begin withdrawal actually begins in Bancroft House, which is beside the SUB, not in room 427 of the Old Sub. Have Kelton sign your paper, hold onto it, and contact me at the above email address from your school account only. Remember thatdownloading and printing out the form will not be enough. Further action will be necessary. Stay tuned and in tune. Please, let us show the administration that we can end this strike, get on with our studies, and improve the standard of living of the members of the AUFA.
