Child Obesity Statistics

Research has shown different definitions for obesity but they all basically mean the same.  The simpler definition I have found is obesity is body weight more than normal for particular age, sex and height.

The most prevalent cause of child obesity is due to either overeating, little to no physical exercise or an eating disorder.  Either or all of these causes has presented a gloomy situation for our children.

We have to be aware of the perils our children face daily in their lives.  Many books, articles, and periodicals have been written on the subject of child obesity but how many of us are taking the time to read them?  How many of us are aware there is a problem with obesity in this country?  How many of us have taken notice of the obesity cases right in our own backyards – in our own households even?

I have compiled an e-book on Childhood Obesity.  There is a lot of pertinent information in this e-book to help all of us take an active part in curbing childhood obesity.

Obesity is measured using both height and weight of our children.  All children are not categorized the same because of the body mass index used to measure obesity.  The body mass index for children should be maintained below the 85th percentile to overcome obesity.

The prevention of child obesity should be a family affair.  Children cannot fight obesity alone.  Children need support and guidance from the entire family.  Parents of children with obesity need to be trained how to monitor their child’s eating habits and their physical activity.

Research says instead of calculating calories a child consumes daily, it would be better to reduce specific foods from the child’s diet.  Especially eliminate those foods high in fats, sugars and salt.  Parents could also assist their child/children by prohibiting television viewing or electronic game playing.  Parents should insist upon more physical activity.

Parents face another impending dilemma with physical activity for their child/children.  That dilemma is crime.  So many of the children affected with obesity live in high crime areas.  Parents would prefer to keep their children indoors rather than have them outdoors in the element.  In this case, parents need to find physical activities children can perform indoors.  Perhaps parents can do a little research to find fun activities for children to perform indoors.
