A meeting generally follows a sequence of regular items to ensure a consistent approach to each meeting. Occasionally competitions or special events are held for variety and a laugh. Regular components of the meeting include a toast, Round Robin, Table Topics, a short business section, some speeches and evaluations, and witty comments by many of the members. Members can volunteer for specific roles at each meeting (eg evaluator, grammarian, Table Topics master) or roles will be allocated to members when there are no volunteers. New members are gladly mentored and assisted in any new roles. | Round Robin: Every member participates. Thirty seconds of off-the-cuff speaking. The first speaker is given a random word to start with by the Chairperson. The following person starts on the word that the previous person finished on. Good practice for thinking on your feet. A buzzer indicates your time is up. Table Topics: Selected members are given a question, topic or theme to speak on and come to the front of the room. They respond to the topic and attempt to talk for a minimum of one minute and a maximum of one-and-half minutes. Good practice for a short impromptu speech and for thinking on the spot. Watch out! - the grammarian is counting your "umms' and "aaahs". |
