Internet and
Website information
There’s an interesting article describing how to read the
descriptions for property sold by the Federal Government under its Public
Domain sales. These applied to all the
states except the original 13 (plus KY, TN, MA, WV, and VT).
James Tanner has a good posting regarding on-line resources
for California research at
DAR Website
Everyone who has ancestors who might have lived during the
American Revolution should consider exploring the data available on the DAR
website at
http://216.36.105.133/DAR_Research/search/
Note that you can search under both “Ancestors” and under “Descendants”. The “Ancestors” search means you are
searching for a person who may actually have been involved in the
revolution.
The “Descendants” search means you are searching for a
person who is listed as a descendant of a revolutionary figure. So, suppose you have traced back to Sarah
Gatliff, b. about 1804. You can put her
name in and you’ll find she has been listed in the descendant trees for 5
different “patriots”.
Another interesting fact is that the DAR recognizes “patriots”
as including both individuals who were in the army during the revolution and
also individuals who gave supplies. For
Sarah, this meant her grandfather, John Wilcoxson, and her grandmother Sarah
(Boone) Wilcoxson //yes, Daniel Boone’s sister// have been accepted by the DAR as
patriots.
There’s a nice article on the DAR site available at
