Welcome to the
New Zealand Smithfield Website
The purpose of this site is to
provide owners and breeders of Smithfield working dogs from all parts of the
globe with a forum where they can contact each other, and exchange information.
The Smithfield breed is a unique breed of
working dog that sports a distinctive bob-tail.
They are a gentle, hardworking and intelligent breed; however sadly,
there are fewer of them every year as cross breeding dilutes the bloodlines.
A concerted effort needs to be made to stem the
demise of this distinctive breed, and this website aims to begin this process
by providing a database of people who share an interest in the Smithfield
breed. What is a Smithfield?
The New Zealand Smithfield is a
medium size dog – typically long coated, but through out-crossing in New
Zealand, tend to be anything from short coat through to long coated.
The original English bred Smithfield had a long
shaggy blue / black coat, however because of the out-crossing of bloodlines, in
New Zealand, they can range across the full range of coat lengths and colours.
The trademark of the Smithfield is the unique
and distinctive bob-tail.
