Shedding Light on the Former
Centre for New Zealand Studies in London

Last updated 13 May 2012

Birkbeck College, part of the University of London, closed The Centre for New Zealand Studies in 2009 even though the Centre was successful and financially viable until April 2011.

This website was set up by Friends of the Centre in 2009 to campaign against its closure. From November 2011 the site is able to make available to the public  documents and information that reveal what happened before the closure and subsequently.

The release of this information follows Dr Ian Conrich, former Director of the Centre, reaching a point where he feels free to release them. It also coincides with the publication of an investigation into the closure of the Centre by Phil Kitchin of the Dominion Post.

*I am an NZ citizen and one of three people living in London who set up this website because we believed the closure of the Centre was unfair, illogical and clearly against New Zealand's interests. Many of the questions asked in 2009 by opponents of the closure went unanswered. This and the travesty of the so called Independent Review and a lack of transparency about finances relating to the Centre prompted requests under the UK Freedom of Information Act and NZ Official Information Act.
