The NZDA was founded in 1937 to promote recreational hunting and shooting sports.  It is a national body with branches throughout New Zealand.  Branches largely arrange their own activities within the guiding rules of association, and each branch contributes financially to the national body according to the number of branch members.

The North Auckland Branch was established in 1958, on its current property at Riverhead.
