Artist Statement
I have been painting for the past 12 years. I began painting in an attempt to communicate an experience I wasn’t able to any other way.
I started in oils but didn’t enjoy the fumes and currently paint in acrylic on board.
I won an award for an oil painting early on which gave me the encouragement I needed to carry on as I was self taught and in a foreign land to begin with.
From the day I picked up a brush I felt I had found my reason for being and am always pleased when I get the sketching part over and get a paintbrush in my hand, something else takes over at that point.
I am most definitely a colourist and constantly play with colour and form. I’m not so interested in portraying realism, but much more interested in creating a unique way of seeing a familiar scene. A lot of my work is about capturing the simple moments, everyday scenes that add up to carry the weight of a life.
My subject matter is varied but tends to have an autobiographical element and reflect some aspect of my life.
Sometimes I paint from photos, sometimes imagination and sometimes a combination.
I tend to move in a never ending circle from extremely detailed to much looser paintings and back again. I’m very easily bored so I need to always be trying new things but I do love to paint people and always seem to come back to that.
I have been lucky enough to win an award judged by Dean Buchanan whom I admire.
I work from my open studio on Waiheke
Island where visitors are always welcome.
