Some bills to keep our eyes on...
Under this bill, grants would be provided to schools with over 65% eligibility for free/reduced-priced meals that want to expand breakfast programs. This act could give additional funds to schools that want to implement breakfast in the classroom. It also supports universal school breakfast and sourcing foods locally.
Hunger Free Schools Act, S.1343
Requires districts to implement direct certification into school meals programs. Also lets schools and local educational agencies use socioeconomic information rather than applications to justify providing universal meals for 5 years.
Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2009, S.934
Requires Agriculture Secretary to set science-based nutrition standards for competitive foods sold in schools outside the breakfast and lunch programs.
Expands free meal eligibility to families whose income is less than 185% of poverty, eliminating the reduced-price category.
