NWTCA Programs

Sunday School

Sunday School is one of the most dynamic and effective programs that is offered by NWTCA. The goal of Sunday School is to immerse our children in Tibetan culture, language and traditions on a weekly basis in order to instill in them a strong sense of their Tibetan roots and identity.

Sunday School begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 3PM. Our students range in age from 7-17 and we currently have 35 students enrolled. 4 levels of Tibetan language classes are offered. Traditional Tibetan songs and dances are taught by our exceptionally talented and patient teacher, Tashi Dhondup la.

Schedule
9:30AM-10AM - Prayers in the Choekhang
10AM-12 Noon - Tibetan song and dance class for younger kids and
Tibetan language classes for older kids
12PM-1PM - Lunch is served!
1PM-3PM - Tibetan song and dance class for older kids and Tibetan language classes for younger kids

Tuition
$20 per month per child includes both language and song and dance
classes (and a delicious, nutritious lunch!)

Lunch Program
Lunch is offered free to all children enrolled in Sunday School. Since it
is paid for and prepared by parents on a rotating basis, we charge a
nominal fee of $3 to anyone else who would like to join us for lunch.
This helps us cover a portion of the expenses.

Summer Camp

The NWTCA has been organizing this camp since 1998. Since 2007, the NWTCA and the Office of Tibet, New York decided to jointly organize the camp in order to strengthen the camp and also to facilitate Tibetan children (between the age of 7 and 13 years) from outside the Portland area to participate in the camp.

Purpose of the Camp:

  1. To expose Tibetan youngsters to their culture and language, and also to the essence of Buddhism
  2. To create an environment for Tibetan youngsters from different parts of North America to develop friendships amongst themselves and to widen their social network
  3. To bring Tibetan youngsters closer to the values of Tibetan culture and to give them a sense of belonging.

Activities at the Camp:
During a weeklong camp, the young children will explore different aspects of the Tibetan culture and way of life. The students will be grouped into two--below and above age 10.

Apart from daily meditation, reciting prayers, and discourse on Buddhist philosophy, senior children who are above age 10 will explore:
  1. Three sacred sites of Tibet, Potala Palace, Jokhang and Yambu Lhakang
  2. Life story of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
  3. Brief introduction to the Tibetan Government in Exile
  4. The three great ancient emperors of Tibet

Younger children, below age 10, will explore:
  1. Prayer flags
  2. Losar celebration
  3. Lhasa Apso - Tibet’s cutest domestic animal
  4. Some aspects of the topics covered for the senior children

These explorations will be totally activity-based with facilitators assisting them whenever there is a need. Along with the above exploration, the young children will learn at least two Tibetan songs and one complete dance. In order to widen the children’s understanding of the Tibetan culture, video film presentation will also be arranged.

Sports and Entertainments:
Swimming, hiking, volleyball, bonfire, etc.

Sunday Prayer

Prayers are held every Sunday from 10:00 am to 12:30 PM.  We occasionally invite spiritual teachers for teachings and lectures. We also observe all auspicious days on the Tibetan calendar and hold prayer gatherings.
