Art Stars

I'm delighted to have the opportunity to volunteer with the patients in the Child Life and Maternity Special Care units at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM.

"Art Stars in the Courtyard" offers beading, collage and other craft projects. Our goal is to create a fun distraction in a relaxing atmosphere, as well as to teach new skills. Volunteers work with patients in a group setting or one on one with those who cannot leave their hospital rooms.

Thanks to the terrific Child Life staff for their assistance in creating this program. "Rachel's Courtyard" in Child Life and the new art studio in the Maternity unit provide unique environments for patients to feel at ease. We hope to spark their creative juices. Special thanks to Judy Cullen, Shana Nisenbaum and Jane Katz for their time, effort and inspiration. Patients are always delighted to work with these wonderful Art Star volunteers.

We're very excited about a new project. In addition to constructing pieces for themselves, many patients are anxious to donate their creations to the hospital's annual "Laughter is the Best Medicine" silent auction.
