About Us

Our History

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Council (“Council”) in Nystrom was started in 2008 by youth at Kennedy High School who participated in the Y-PLAN, an initiative of the UC Berkeley Center for Cities & Schools.

From June of 2008 through May of 2009, the Council was known as the NURVE Youth Advisory Council. In June of 2009, the Council agreed to change its name to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and represent the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Recreation Center as its home base.

Community Served

The Council represents the area of Richmond known as “Nystrom.” Nystrom includes parts of the Santa Fe and Coronado neighborhoods, and is bordered to the north by the Iron Triangle. The Council also serves the larger Richmond community.
