"If you're ever contemplating suicide, think of RAAS."
The NU Raas Team was founded in 2003 and is Northwestern's first and
only competitive garba/raas team. We choreograph and perform
garba/raas, an Indian folk dance from Gujarat. Although our team is one
of the newest in the country, we have gained some valuable experience
by competing in numerous cities across the nation. In 2005, we traveled
to Washington, D.C. for our first competition called Raas Chaos and
took home 2nd place! The next year, we placed in the 3rd Place at Garba with Attitude in Los Angeles, as well as at Raas Chaos
in Washington, D.C. We also placed 2nd at Nachte Raho in Iowa City. In 2007, we traveled back to Washington DC and took home 1st place at Raas Chaos. Our first win ever! In addition, we enjoy performing and spreading our
love of garba/raas at many informal events around campus.
Each member of NU Raas brings a diverse background and style to the team. Many of the dancers have years of experience in dance while some have none. This unique level of experience makes it enjoyable to learn dance. One thing we all have in common is our love for Garba-Raas. With our love of Garba-Raas and our drive to compete has brought us together to form a single team.
