October 28, 2009 Professor McClendon When Newton's method goes bonkers URL  Newton's method is an iterative scheme that allows you to approximate roots of differentiable functions. In the examples you see in calculus, it works rather well. But sometimes things go wrong. In this talk we'll explore why Newton's method works when it does, why it fails when it fails, and what this has to do with more sophisticated ideas from dynamical systems, complex variables, and fractal geometry.
