Nguiu

The Nguiu Volunteer Fire Brigade is a small volunteer brigade situated on Bathurst Island, 70km north of Darwin. When the Elliott brigade received their new fire appliance, the 4WD International Acco was returned to the Darwin workshops for a checked over, then transported to Nguiu by barge to replace the fire trailer previously in use on the island.

The Nguiu brigade was a successful recipient of a $65,000 grant under the 2009-2010 National Emergency Volunteers Support Fund administered by Emergency Management Australia. The grant, which was announced on 5 August, will be used to construct a fire station to enable volunteers to meet, undertake training and house equipment. At present the fire truck parks under a tree at the local Police Station, exposed to the elements.

The Fire Station will be built on the grounds of the existing Police Station, which will be most effective as it is the local constabulary who are usually first to man the fire truck when a fire breaks out in the community.

Once the new fire station has been built, it is anticipated that the Nguiu volunteers will take delivery of appliance '21', the small ex-Batchelor tanker at present being looked after by the Howard Springs brigade. This will release for disposal from Bathurst Island the ex-Elliott tanker 911, which is the last of the old International ACCOs in the NTFRS fleet.
