Lou's Christmas Wish

posted Nov 16, 2011 3:35 PM by Lou Cowan

I was asked yesterday "What do you want for Christmas?" Hmmm … this is what I would really like!

A present sat on the living room floor, under the Christmas tree

It was squat, and covered in pretty wrap … what ever could it be?

Was it a reel for my fishing rod, or a spanner, or book?

I couldn’t pass Christmas Eve without sneaking a look!

I picked up the pressie to feel the weight; it seemed as light as air

Then the ribbon sort of came undone, no help from me that I swear!

The wrapper then went and unfolded itself, and slowly fell to the floor

Exposing a box with a lid, and the words “To be opened on Dec 24.”

I lifted the lid, and hiding inside was a note that was folded in two.

The message written in a beautiful script was titled “This is for Lou.”

It read: “Hi … I heard you speaking just the other night to Elaine, your darling wife. It appears that you are both on call with the firies over the Christmas break, and you wished for a Christmas period totally free of emergency calls. You said that this would mean that fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, extended family, friends and neighbours could enjoy the festivities without unforeseen trauma. It also means that police, fireys, ambos, doctors, nurses and other emergency personnel can relax a little as well over this period. I have a contact in a Very High Position, so I’ll see what I can do about your wish!”

It looked like my wish of a few days ago, had somehow been granted to me,

As the note had been signed in a flourishing hand by “the Angel on top of the tree!”

The very best of Christmas wishes to all volunteers and their families, and to all visitors to this website!

Yet another contingent of firefighters leaves Darwin tomorrow (29 October) for Alice Springs. Looking at the NAFI website there can't be too much unburned land down that way left now!

A further strike team of two GFUs and a tanker leaves today for the Southern Region, to again support our sister fire authority Bushfires NT. A look at the fire scars on the NAFI website shows that approximately 80% of the land for about 500km around Alice Springs has now burned since June this year

Alice Springs Fires

posted Oct 18, 2011 5:57 AM by Lou Cowan   [ updated Oct 18, 2011 6:01 AM ]

This season has seen an unprecedented number of fires in the NT's Southern Region. In August, numerous wildfires were running to the south and west of Alice Springs, and a contingent of volunteers were deployed from the Darwin Rural brigades to assist. A large hazard reduction burn was undertaken to safeguard the east side of Alice Springs town.

Although the fires abated slightly, by late September they were running again, and extended over an area from Kings Canyon to the Barkly Highway. At this stage, the severity of the fires promoted the establishment of the Alice Springs Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), in accordance with the local disaster plan. More Darwin rural volunteers were deployed in several waves in September and October to assist Bushfires NT, and at present it looks like the requirement for assistance will be required well into November. And at this time, we are just starting to enter the Central Australian wildfire season.

So it looks like it will be a marathon fire season this year. A very big thanks to all those volunteers who were able to commit the time to assist, as it certainly made a huge difference. A very special thanks to Bob and Cameron from the Humpty Doo brigade, who ended up bugging two lines of fire for about 70 kilometres up the west side of Luritja Road, towards Kings Creek Station.

And to Gary and Steve from Howard Springs, your efforts with the cattle stations up to the north east were said to be legendary! Thanks guys!
