International Walk to School Day

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Walk to School Day is October 5.  On that day, schools across the world will join together to promote physical activity, pedestrian safety, and concern for the environment.  We encourage everyone to walk that day.  If it is too far to walk, consider driving only part of the way to school and walking the remainder of the trip.

Beyond Fundraising: PTAs Support Students, Build Community

September, 2011

Read an article about what PTAs in the Annandale pyramid (that's us) are doing to improve local schools:

Northern Virginia District PTA

Please take a minute to visit the website of the NOVA District PTA.  The mission of the organization is to promote the goals of PTA - supporting and speaking on behalf of children in our schools, helping parents to be effective guardians and role models for their children, and encouraging greater parental involvement at the school level - through the dissemination of information, promotion of legislative participation, and provision of skill development and enhancement to local and council PTAs.

FYI 2011 Budget

Fairfax County Public Schools anticipates having to face a budget deficit of $100 to $200 million for FY 2011 (next school year).

For information, please visit the county’s website at: http://www.fcps.edu/news/fy2011.htm

Citizens are invited to help school leaders determine the priorities for the next budget year.  In partnership with Fairfax County government, FCPS is holding a series of budget community dialogues on six dates throughout the county, and invites all citizens to attend and join in the budget discussions. Information about the FY 2010 budget can be found here.

From the NSES PTA President...

Welcome to the North Springfield Elementary School (NSES) PTA Web site. I am Cyndi Brown, PTA president for the 2011-2012 school year.  I am excited about the events and services our committees have planned and look forward to working with the parents, faculty, and staff to make this a great year.

We are a dedicated group of parents and teachers working on committees, in the classrooms, and at after school events, to make your child's elementary school experience a positive one both academically and socially.  We rely solely on volunteers and fundraising - that’s where you come in!  Any amount of time you can give to the PTA is greatly welcomed and appreciated.  Some committees require just minutes a month, while others can provide lengthier opportunities for involvement.  Our events start in September and continue throughout the school year.  Please check the Calendar and Committee pages for more information and to help evaluate where your time and talents are needed.

The PTA generally meets the first Tuesday of every month from 7:00-8:00 PM in the school library.  The first PTA Meeting of this school year will be held on October 4th, 2011 from 7:00-8:00 pm in the school library.  A full listing of dates and times is available on the Calendar.  Please feel free to join us and find out how you and your family can get involved.  We are currently experimenting with some ways to help make meetings more accessible to all families.  Some of the ideas we plan to try are school-aged child care during the meetings and pot-luck dinners.  The calendar will be updated to reflect these special meetings, so please check back often for the latest updates.  If you have any questions, ideas or additional comments, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me .  We look forward to working with you and having a great year!

 Cyndi Brown
