Hello, and welcome to the (semi) technical instructions on how to build a chapter website on Google Sites.  You can never learn to drive a car simply by reading a book - you've got to actually get behind the wheel and DO IT.  So that's the general principle here.  This document is written on Google Sites, so you can start out by simply being a passenger in the car and get used to how things operate.

Google Sites is pretty easy to use once you play around with it.  This site is to help point you in the right direction and provide some simple directions if needed.

Bottom line, this is REALLY EASY stuff.  If you can create and edit an MS Word document, you can create and maintain a Google Site.  It's a slightly different tool of course, but it's nowhere near as complicated as it used to be.  Hicks's first law states "Anything is easy if you know how to do it."   So roll up your sleeves and let's get started...

Getting started

The first thing you need is a Google Account - which is just your email address if you have a gmail account.  If you don't already have one, it's easy to get and it's free.  Go to ...

     http://www.google.com/

... and click on "Sign in" in the upper right hand corner of the page.  If you don't have an account, click "Create an account now" and fill out the resulting simple form.

Once you have an account, go to ...

     http://sites.google.com/

... and click on the "Create new site" button.

Your website can be named anything but the general guideline is a name like "nsametropolis" if, like Superman, you live in Metropolis.  Examples are "nsadallas" and "nsalosangeles", etc..

Then click on "More themes" and scroll down to the very last one called "Launch default".  Select that one and push the "Create Site" button.  And voila, you've created your site and you're off to the races!

To go to the next page, do one of three things:
  1. Click <Next page> below.
  2. Click on the page you want to see on the sidebar on the left.
  3. Click on the page you want to see on the "Subpages" bar at the bottom of this page.
