Profile of Prof.N.Ramesh
Prof. Ramesh began his corporate career with Larsen & Toubro Limited in Mumbai as a Graduate Engineer Trainee in 1978, after completion of his B.E. (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from BITS, Pilani. He completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from Indian Institute of Management , Bangalore in 1984. Over a span of 13 years, Prof.Ramesh gained exposure and experience in many functional areas such as Manufacturing, R& D, Production Planning, Materials Management and Marketing & Sales .He worked in the marketing and sales function of the Switchgear Standard Products Division of L&T. Prof.Ramesh also had a stint as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President, where he gained an intimate insight into the planning and strategy formulation processes at the highest level of a multi-divisional technology-intensive organization like L&T.
Prof.Ramesh worked in Muscat for a brief period, again in a technology-intensive product company. While the exposure to international brands was good, the real gain was the deep appreciation of the comparative strengths of the Indian economy - the magnitude of its technological expertise, the diversity of its manufacturing base and the exciting professional challenges in Indian organizations. He returned to India.
Prof.Ramesh was associated with a start-up venture-capital assisted enterprise, Enercon Systems Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore ( rechristened as Conzerve Systems Pvt. Ltd.) engaged in the design, manufacture and marketing of digital energy management products and systems. He played an instrumental role in facilitating its turn-around - from a substantial accumulated loss to a healthy, sustainable profit-making venture. During this period, he had been closely engaged in shaping the technology and business strategy of the start-up venture through its critical phase of survival and growth. Central to this success-story had been the new product development activity of the company supported by intensive R&D efforts within the constraints of resources, but at the same time, driven by the time-to-market considerations of a competitive market place. The rapidly liberalizing economic environment only rendered the situation more dynamic! This was the time when Prof. Ramesh developed an appreciation of the need to adopt modern management tools, techniques and skills in the areas of R&D, technology and new product development. He found this far more relevant and even critical for the competitiveness of the technology-intensive companies in the SME sector facing the brutal forces of globalization and liberalization.
Prof.Ramesh cut his academic teeth in Goa Institute of Management, Panjim in 1997. He taught courses in Strategic Marketing, Business Marketing Strategy and Marketing Implementation. Since 2000, Prof.Ramesh is with the T.A. Pai Management Institute’s Centre for Executive Education (TAPMI-CEE), Bangalore. He teaches Marketing Strategy, using a computer-based business simulation as the primary learning platform. Prof.Ramesh has also taught Business Strategy and Basic Marketing. Prof.Ramesh has conducted in-company programmes for Mahyco, Oracle and Manipal Press.
Prof.Ramesh has submitted his doctoral dissertation on ‘Strategic Management of Technology in Technology Intensive Small & Medium Enterprises’ to Bangalore University and is awaiting his defense.
