Update 3/18/11 --
I still have four units who have not turned in their numbers (2 packs and 2 troops). However, I can report that, so far, we have 87,038 lbs. of food collected and distributed to 23 food pantries. That is a 29% increase or 25,809 lbs. more food than last year. Awesome job, all of you!
I have been sharing the various thank you notes I have received from food pantries who were grateful for your hard work during the food drive.
I have just sent out thank you's to all the schools and charter organizations who had told me they would be promoting Scouting for Food in their newsletters. The list is below. If I have missed one, please let me know. Also, I am going to write to all the charter organizations letting them know how well you all did during the food drive.
I am reviewing all the comments you sent me in your post-SFF unit reports. Thanks for all the suggestions, good ideas and even criticisms. I will respond to all of them; it's just going to take me a while.
Fulton ES, Worthington ES, Burleigh Manor MS, Forest Ridge ES, Wilde Lake MS, Mayfield Woods MS, Northfield ES, Glenelg HS, Harper's Choice MS, Bellows Spring ES, Folly Quarter MS, Centennial Lane ES, Lisbon ES, Bushy Park ES, St. Louis School, Owen Brown Community Association, & Bethany United Methodist Church.
Thanks. Sori

We are up to 51,728 lbs. of food. Have we counted what your unit collected? Today is the deadline for the report. Without the report I don't know how many patches to get for your unit.
Please go to this link and fill it out. It's a very simple form.
Update 3/10/11 --
Several of you commented that my emails are too long and too many, so here's the bullet version of this email. Email me if you have questions.
Unit ID: (number I gave you for your unit)
Unit Type: (Pack, Troop, Crew, Ship, Group or Lodge)
Local Unit Number: (this is the number of your pack, troop, or crew. Try making it a 4 digit-number by adding a zero at the beginning -- Troop 123 would be Troop 0123)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 2/9/11 --
About 1/2 of you have completed the post-SFF report and, so far, we have 40,698 lbs. of food donated reported in.
Have you turned in your numbers? Your deadline is this Friday, 3/11/11, so I can turn in my numbers and get patches for your boys/girls.
I am still working on the Good Turn for America issues and will get back to you soon.
Thanks for participating in Scouting for Food this year. You all have made a huge impact in the community. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Update 2/28/11 --
Some units have completed their food collections already so I am sending you a link to the post food drive report form.
Please note that participation is considered any time a boy or girl has worked during the entire food drive. He/she can work distributing bags only or picking up donation only or both to get credit (count them only once). We are also asking you to report your service hours during the Scouting for Food program to the Good Turn for America website. You can get your unit number code from me. Please follow the instructions on the link below. Thanks for remembering to complete the reports. I just learned today that we have patches for the kids who participated. If you report in before the deadline, your kids will get patches. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/27/11 --
I hope bag distribution went well for all of you.
If you have not called yet and need to make special arrangements with the food pantry that's been assigned to you, please call them as soon as possible. You want to be sure you can deliver all the food without inconveniencing them.
The complete list of participating food pantries can be found on the Scouting for Food website at:
You will find instructions on what you need to do on that list.
Many people around the county have reporting to me that they have received their bag, so GREAT JOB!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/23/11 --
The weather forecast for Saturday is calling for a cloudy day but no precipitation of any kind. Many units will go out and distribute their bags Saturday and others will do it during the week next week.
DO NOT OPEN MAILBOXES -- Please note that you are not allowed to open people's mailboxes and put the bag inside. You can hang the bag on the outside of the mailbox or at the door. It is a Federal offense to open people's mailboxes.
SIGNS -- If you have signs, put them out. If you're a unit that stands at subdivision entrances, please be aware that if you are right at the corners, people cannot see while driving, so don't block their line of vision. Stay away from the corners. Also, I know it's exciting to be a sign holder, but encourage your scouts to stand still so the sign can be read. A sign jumping up and down will not be readable.
BAGS & NOTES -- I have done everything within my power to get you the bags and notes/inserts you need. If you still need your supplies, email me and let me know NOW!
SAFETY -- Do I need to say it? Have lots of adult volunteers. Keep the kids off the street. Drive slowly. What else? Be careful out there!
GOOD NEWS -- We have one more food pantry signed up to receive donations from Scouting for Food. Welcome Jewish Federation of Howard County! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 2/20/11 --
The weather was not ideal today, but I did leave the table with all the bags and notes that have not been picked up. I will leave the same table out tomorrow (Sunday, 2/20) all day. I am in the middle of a family emergency and have been out of the house quite a bit.
The rest of the week, the weather is not going to cooperate so I will not be able to leave everything out past tomorrow afternoon. Please try to come by to get your bags and notes because you may not find me home the rest of the week.
This is your last chance! Scouting for Food bag distribution is next Saturday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 2/18/11 --
There are 17 units who have not picked up their bags and/or cards. Be forewarned that stapling the notes to the bags takes some time. Get your stuff NOW!
Since it's a nice day tomorrow (Saturday, 2/19), my plan is to put all the supplies on a table outside my garage in case you can come by to get them. I will be in and out tomorrow all day so this will prevent the possibility of your coming over and not finding me here. You are welcome to call me if you'd like.
Everything is labeled. Please do not take anyone else's supplies. I don't have anymore bags and notes and Council is running out of both.
Girl Scouts, your bags say "GS ## - T ####." Your bags also have your leaders name on them.
Boy Scout and Cub Scout units, yours say T### or P###.
If I've made an error in the supplies you need, let me know and I will get them to you.
Update 2/15/11 --
Thanks to everyone who came to Bethany UMC to pick up supplies for Scouting for Food tonight. I really appreciate your driving to get them and your patience.
I have many units that have not picked up their bags and/or notes. Please let me know what you want to do to get them from me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 2/15/11 -- p.m.
I sent you two files via email: Template in Word from Troop 944 & Template in Publisher of note created by Council
Please feel free to edit and use for your own unit. Some of you asked for the logo to add to your notes (bsa_logo_clipart_rwb.bmp)
You can download these three files HERE.

Update 2/15/11 -- a.m.
BAGS--
NOTES --
Thanks to everyone who came to get their bags and notes. Sorry to those who didn't get notes. Thanks to all who helped me distribute bags and notes. Have a great day! Update 2/13/11 -- TO DO LIST
1. Remember your sweetheart on Valentine's Day and avoid trouble....check!
2. Go to Roundtable to pick up bags and notes.
3. Staple notes to bags.
4. Look at the maps ahead of time and have a plan; do not say "we'll figure it out on that day." Make your time count.
5. Promote Scouting for Food in school, at work and at sports.
6. Look up your unit's food pantry and make arrangements if that's what's required.
7. Think, plan and DO "welfare and safety of the boys and girls" -- Have plenty of adult volunteers to drop off bags and pick up food at residences.
8. Drop off food at food pantry on time. No need to sort food; just drop off what you picked up.(Some pantries may ask you to help sort and it's entirely up to you whether to do so or not.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Updates 2/12/11 --
The food pantry assignments have been made and you can find the master list here:
There is also a list of food pantry assignments by unit type and number.
Please review the lists and let me know if you have problems with your assignments. Most of you got the food pantry you had in previous years, and I think I accomodated all the special requests (but I may have made mistakes). I have tried to match up need, location and territory, so I hope most of you are happy with the location of your food pantry.
You all need to look at the master list for instructions for the food pantry that's been assigned to you. Many have requested that you make arrangements individually and/or have noted special hours they will be open to receive the donations.
Those units that have to postpone drop off of donations until the afternoon, please be sure to make arrangements. Most of the food pantries will be open in the morning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The focus this week has been publicity. I have contacted local media with press releases, community calendar requests and public service announcement requests. Let's hope some of them give us a bit of free publicity. All charter organizations I know of have also been contacted and a couple have indicated they will help us out.
The following schools have written back saying they will promote SFF in their newsletters and some have already printed our blurb. I even got a request from a unit saying they want to participate in SFF after seeing it in their school's newsletter (more maps! :-p )
Bushy Park ES, Lisbon ES, Centennial Lane ES, Folly Quarter MS, Bellows Spring ES, Harper's Choice MS, Glenelg HS, Northfiled ES, Mayfield Woods MS, Wilde Lake MS, Forest Ridge ES, Burleigh Manor MS, Worthington ES, & Fulton ES.
Now it's your turn. If you see your child's school listed above, please make sure you thank the principal in your school for publicizing SFF. If you do not see your child's school listed, request that SFF is mentioned in that school's newsletter. Also, email everyone you know in the county and mentioning that your son or daughter is doing SFF and you just want to remind them to help by donating food. Talk it up at work, at school and at sports activities. Mention that the blue Mars bags at their mailboxes are not trash.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/11/11 -- Scouting for Food 2012 - April 14-21. Makes plans in your unit's calendar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/10/11 -- I'm still working on the food pantry list and am getting close to posting what I have. I think the food pantries that haven't called me back are not interested which was the case with
them last year. I wanted to remind everyone to ask your child(ren)'s school to promote Scouting for Food in their newsletters so people in the community are reminded that we are collecting food. I have gotten emails from 14 schools saying they will be putting in a blurb in their newsletter. I also emailed all the chartered organizations that I know and asked that they promote SFF in their publications. You can also help by talking to everyone in your neighborood and at work about Scouting for Food since it's a Council wide food drive. Word of mouth is another free way to promote SFF. I would encourage you to look at your territories if you have not done so already. Let me know if you're having problems with the maps. I am posting pdf files of your territories, and it's going to take me a little while to get to all of the units. Don't forget bags and notes will be available at Roundtable on the 14th of February. Roundtable is held at Columbia Academy at 10350 Old Columbia Road, Columbia, MD 21046) at 7:30 p.m. Those of you who cannot make it there, please email me and we'll make arrangements to get you bags. Thanks. Sori ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/8/11 -- 2012 SFF will be April 14-21
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 2/5/11 -- Working really hard during my one hour-a-week volunteer time [ ;-p ], we have all maps confirmed except for one (this one if totally my fault).
The Howard County Public School Public Information Office will be forwarding information about Scouting for Food to all schools. To insure everyone gets the information many times (aka, nagging), I have also emailed all the principals in the county asking them to promote the food drive in the schools' newsletters. (I have already heard back from 4 schools telling me YES.) Please reinforce this message at your children's schools if possible by mentioning them that I have written and you know about it or just by asking them to put a blurb in the school newsletter. I have provided each school with a short blurb with all the relevant information, but here it is for your information:
Students in your school who are Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be collecting non-perishable food and taking it to over 20 food pantries in the county on March 5th, 2011. Be on the look out for a Mars (our sponsor) blue plastic bag which will be dropped off a few days before collection day at your home. Please fill it with unexpired, non-perishable food and leave it at your door or by the mailbox (weather permitting) and they will come by and get it on March 5th. Thanks for your generous donations. For more information, please email scoutingforfoodNPD@verizon.net. Next week, I will be working on the food pantry list. I will be assinging food pantries according to their needs.
As you make plans for drop off and pick up of bags, keep in mind the welfare and safety of the kids. Plan on lots of adult supervision. We don't know what the streets will look like in March, so let's think safety.
Thanks for being such a great group of folks to work with. You have been very patient negotiating territories and have graciously forgiven me for mistakes I've made.
Happy Super Bowl Day!
Update 2/3/11 --
If a neighborhood has "No Soliciting" signs, please abide by their wishes and don't "scout" that neighborhood. We do not want nasty correspondence from a neighborhood association.
Almost all maps are up to date. I still have a couple of units that need to get back to me with their final okey dokey on their territories. Please do so as soon as possible.
If you have not gotten a chance to look at your territory via the Google Map, please do so and make sure you are clear on your unit's territory. Because we can see far more detail than in years past, we should have zero conflict this year on who is supposed to do which streets (unless I made a mistake in the assignments). Please take a look at your maps at least once and let me know if you have questions or issues with the territories.
Some of you have asked to take donations to a specific food pantry and I've marked those on my list. I will be assigning food pantries to units based on need. If you want to take your donations to a specific food pantry (not all can go to Howard County Food Bank though), please let me know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 2/2/11 - --
To respond to me, email to scoutingforfoodNPD@verizon.net.
We have been having technical difficulties with the Google Maps I created and I have been consulting with Gianpaolo "GP" Baglione, Pack 618 Committe Chair, who is the one who originally suggested we use Google Maps for this food drive (GREAT suggestion!). When the maps are working, they are wonderful. The maps I created most recently seem have the issue of not showing the borders of unit territories. We think that some of the maps might not have been public, so I have gone through all the maps and made sure they are public. We are not sure if you have to have a gmail account and be logged in before you can see the lines as only you know if you have a gmail account and if you were logged into it in Google Maps. I would venture to guess that you do have to have a gmail account and you have to be logged into Gmail/Google Maps. After much discussion, GP and I have decided that if you want to work with the maps online to share with your units, I can make you a collaborator of the map. Ideally, you would put more border lines in to indicate which den is getting which streets and those borders would be in the map on the SFF website. That map could be "handed down," so to speak, to the next person working as the unit's SFF representative, so you'd have a permanent electronic record. If you want to work with your map electronically, let me know and I will add you as a collaborator. GP has graciously offered his expertise for free to help you learn how to use these maps as he has the software and the knowledge. Please feel free to ask him questions directly. His email address is: baglog@gmail.com Thanks for your help, GP.

Update 1/31/11 --
When you receive an email from me via the email list on google groups, you cannot reply to it. You have to write me an email at scoutingforfoodNPD@verizon.net. I know that is inconvenient, but this prevents from everyone getting an email that is not relevant to them via the google groups mail list. Please remember to include your unit type and number. Sorry for the extra work.
LAST CALL for free notes being provided by the Council office to attach to or insert in bags. Mars plastic bags are not printed with needed information. Your deadline is Tuesday, 2/1.
We are almost finished establishing territories for the entire district. I have started contacting food pantries and hope to have that list up soon.
Those of you who have good relationships with your school principals, please ask that Scouting for Food be promoted in the school newsletter. I am about to send out an email to all schools asking for the same, but I think it will be more meaningful if it comes from a parent of the school rather than a stranger.
Also, chartering organizations are a good outlet to promote Scouting for Food by asking that a blurb be put in their weekly bulletins or their newsletters. If anyone can get it promoted on the marquis/outdoor signs of the schools or churches, go for it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 1/30/11 -- We continue to have problems with the boundary lines disappearing off the maps I'm sending you from Google Maps. I have tried every trick I know to make it work and not everyone can view them. If it would be helpful, I will make a pdf file of the map and email it to you. You're also welcome to a paper copy of the territory which you can pick up at Roundtable or I can snail mail it to you.
I apologize for all the glitches. I really thought Google Maps would be a good way to communicate territory information, but it's turned out to be a pain for a few of you. I apologize for that. It is free of charge, so you get what you pay for. Reminder that if you want notes to attach to or include with your SFF bags, you have to order them from me. Let me know by Tuesday of this coming week so that we can give Council enough time to print them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update 1/29/11 --
If you want notes provided by Council for your bags, please email me and let me know. Use the link below and tell me how many notes and unit type and number.
I have just found out that when I make you a collaborator for the Google Map for your unit, you do not get an invitation, you just get an email that tells you you can go to the map and a link is provided.
A couple of units still have to get back to me about their territories. Please do so as soon as possible. I have communicated with everyone who requested additional territory or different territory. If you haven't heard from me and are expecting it, email me at the email address above.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 1/28/11 --
Bags -- 58,000 bags are now safely in my garage ready to be distributed at the February Roundtable. Come early and help me unload the van; you'll get your bags first!!!
I learned today that the bags do not have the usual verbage printed on them as in years past. Mars donated their regular plastic bags they use at their stores which are blue and have their red logo on them. The Council office will provide us with a 1/4 sheet of paper that is printed on both sides as shown on the attached pdf file. You can either staple the note to the bag or insert the note in the bag.
You can order notes by emailing me back with your unit type (Troop, Pack, GS Troop) and number. I will order the number of notes equal to the number of bags your unit is getting.
Girl Scouts -- You can get bags and notes from me if you want them. You can either come to Roundtable (Feb. 14 at Columbia Academy, 7:00 p.m.), my house (Ellicott City) or my son's troop meeting on a yet-to-be-determined Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. (Bethany UMC in Ellicott City). I am not sure if Harvest for the Hungry bags are available so you may want to check with your SUM if you want to use GS bags.
Territory Issues -- There are a couple of units that have not gotten back to me on the proposed territory I sent you. Please let me know asap where you are with this.
Map Issues -- We continue to experience problems with people not being able to see the boundary lines of their territory on their maps. Google has emailed me twice saying they are working on the problem, but I am not going to hold my breath. I have found that if I make you collaborator of the map, you might be able to view it. If you are having this problem, let me know and I will send you an invitation to be a collaborator to the map and maybe you will see what I see on my screen. You will not be able to modify the map. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Update 1/24/11 -- My communications to you are increasing at this point of the food drive so I need to create a google group list to make it more efficient. The name of the group is scouting-for-food-npd-2011. You will receive and email letting you know that you have been added to the group. If you have a problem with being added to this mail list, let me know. If you do not receive an email from Google Groups, also let me know.
The maps on Google Maps don't seem to be working very well tonight. All the border lines are not showing up, so I am going to check tomorrow morning to see if it works better. Meanwhile, I'll keep working on territories. We are almost done with territory distribution.
Update 1/21/11 -- Electronic maps (google maps) of last year's territories are up on the website. If your unit asked for different and/or additional territory, I am working on that right now. The maps on the website are not the final territories if you've asked for a change. When you get a chance, check out your map and make sure it coincides with what you believe is your territory. Those of you who have indicated that you will be collecting food donation at a food store, please make sure you have asked for permission by calling the store where you inted to be. I do not make these arrangements. As soon as I you know of your location (if I don't know this already), please let me know. I have a handful of units that have not registered and as of this weekend, I will be re-distributing their territory since I have a couple of new units and other units asking for additional territory.
Update 1/17/11 -- Due to email problems, I had to change the email address for Scouting for Food to scoutingforfoodnpd@verizon.net
Update 1/10/11 -- Majority of units and some new units have registered. This month I will work on finishing maps on the website. If you haven’t registered, please do it now. |
