Team DRYL Freezin’ For A Reason Again….

2011 Polar Bear Plunge

January 29th 2011

WOW – Where do I begin??  Team DRYL again came through with flying colors!  We had close to 40 plungers who raised close to $10,000 for a great cause.  What an effort!  From what I was told, our team raised the most money among participating teams and our team had the largest number of plungers.  We also had the person who raised the most money over all on our team. Mike O’Malley from Penna. YC was able to raise close to $5K.  How cool is that???   What a wonderful thing from a truly, truly nice guy.  One would have thought that the snow would have chased many away but that was not true at all.  This years turnout was larger than the last two years (wonder if this years celebrity plunger - Danny Bonaduce had anything to do with it).  It was reported on the news that close to 1000 plunged and around $150K was raised for the Special Olympics Of Penna.  What a day !

There were a few Princesses and Past Princesses in the crowd, and a couple even plunged.  Our very own lovely Queen Rebecca took the dip and was awarded “Best Youth Costume ” for being dressed as The Queen of Hearts.  How fitting is that as I have come to realize, she really is a Queen of Hearts.  Members from her home club, Bordentown YC, led by Commodore Scott Jones dressed to the theme of Alice In Wonderland and they all really looked GREAT!

Two school bus loads with members from River Winds YC, National Park BC and Westville PBA came up and spent the day with us.  When you get those 3 clubs together, you can bet you are in for good time.  I have to give a shout out to WPBA who took home the honors for most plungers on our team with NINETEEN !!!  We had over 13 clubs get involved with plungers this year and many more clubs came up to watch and enjoy the festivities.

As with any event, people have to come through with efforts to make things happen.  This event is no different.  I really need to give thanks to members from my home club NHYC.  A few of my members arrived early (7:30AM) , and shoveled out a place for the tents we all took safe harbor in for heat, hot coffee, snacks and more importantly – “The Changing Room”.  I just need to thank a few who humped snow and worked not only for our club, but for the league - Karen & Fig Newton, Pat Weller, Tony Williams, and Dale Kishbaugh – thank you guys!

After the plunge we all made our way to Penna YC who again were nice enough to open their doors to us.  They put out a huge spread and donated $250 for the cause to boot.  We have to give big thanks to PYC Commodore Burke and his members for their efforts to us, and for us.

All in all – it was a sunny day, a bit nippy, and the water was a tad cold – but we raised a lot of money for a good cause, got to hang out with some great people and spend some time by the river we all enjoy.

A big Thank You to Cheryl Deacon for plunging for N.P.B.C.!!

NATIONAL PARK - 10/10/2009

Even a windy and rainy Saturday couldn't stop the National Park Boat Club from doing what it does all year long, giving back to the community.

About two dozen members were out this weekend to clean the beach along the Delaware River at Red Bank Battlefield.

The effort, organized by boat club member Wells Reeve, resulted in the filling of about 500 trash bags with debris picked up along the shore.

"We come up and down the river and see this pollution," said Reeve, a National Park resident. "People come from all over to be here and it shouldn't look like this."

Reeve said he found oil cans, buckets with tar, countless empty bottles and other trash. The cleanup effort will be scheduled every spring, said Reeve.

"People at the boat club don't hesitate to volunteer for a cause like this," Reeve said as he picked trash from the beach.

Even Mayor Pat Koloski, a boat club member for the past six years, was out with a bag in hand.

"This is about pride," she said. "We take pride in our town."

She explained that a lot of this debris washes up to the shore and comes from boaters who dump things as they are on board their vessels.

"There have been a lot of surprising things we picked up," said Koloski. "This is our effort to make sure people get the message that we do love our town."

Keep the beach clean, she said, "We have to live here."

This particular effort just showed the way this non-profit organization operates.

Each year, they sponsor a family around the holidays Ð providing food, presents and other necessities. They also host various fundraisers in which all profits go to different charities.

"We just do what we can to help the community," said member Frank Poper, a 27-year-old West Deptford resident who was out Saturday morning to clean the beach. "I think it's great to see the smiles on people's faces. You know you're helping them out."

The National Park Boat Club is a non-profit organization located on Riverview Road and has some 100 active members. For more information, go the group's Web site at www.nationalparkboatclub.com.

There were over 100 anglers who raised over

$2,500

for the Cancer Society. Great job Frank Poper for organizing such a great tournament. You make the Boat Club and the MacDonald family proud.  (2009)
