The National Park Boat Club was started in 1954 with seven members meeting at various locations such as the Columbia Café and the home of various members.  The original charter members were: Bill “Widge” Banks, Steve Parks Sr., Bill Plotts Sr., Abe Simon, Charlie Mootz, Walt “Mushrat” Wasiluk and Ben Taitt.  On June 25 1957 the club became incorporated.
In 1960 the foundation was begun for the permanent home of the club.  The building was completed in 1962.  The property the building sits on was sold to the club for $40.00 by Jules Heiser.  Bill Plotts Sr., found the first porch in the dump and brought here for the club house.

So much of the club history from the 60’s and 70’s has been almost nonexistent due to the passing of many of the original club members and much of the old records being discarded.

In 1982 Fred Gattuso was elected Commodore.  The club was going up for Sheriff Sale due to back taxes in the amount of $300.00.  Mr. Gattuso ran a 50/50 and raised the necessary monies to save the club.  It was Mr. Gattuso who spearheaded the rebuilding of the Club’s building (inside and out) and the parking lot.  He also obtained a liquor license, applied for non-profit tax exemption status and above all increased the membership to approximately 100.  His hard and dedicated work during his time as Commodore (1982-1984) is the basis of the club, as we know it today.

In 1982 Fred Gattuso also got the Club reinstated into the D.R.Y.L. after many years of absence.  In 1983 they selected the Clubs first Princess-Barbara Hassell.  In the 1983 D.R.Y.L. Queen’s Pageant Ms. Hassell was selected as 2nd runner-up and the Club won best-decorated boat and best-decorated club.  In 1984 the N.P.B.C. again won the best-decorated club.

Many other events were started at this time such as the Crab Feast and the Tube Float (The Tube Float was initiated by Ray Nuneviller, S.) both of these events have become very large and rewarding events for the Club and Charity.  Another event that was started during this time was the annual installation of Officer’s Dinner.

In 1993 the back Deck was all concreted and the picnic tables were made.  There were numerous members involved in pouring the concrete under the guidance of Joe Clouser.  The picnic tables were made under the direction of Tom Norwood Sr., and Rich Rathoff built the Canopy on the back Deck.

In 1993 Dick Stager and George Plotts started the first Catfish Tournament.  With the passing of James Macdonald Sr., a friend of the club; husband of Helen “Mom Mac” MacDonald, father of James MacDonald, and Grandfather of Frank Poper, the Catfish Tournament was renamed in his memory in 1994.  Still to this day the Tournament is growing year by year.  Frank Poper took over chairing the tournament in 2007.  In 2009 Frank hauled in a whopping 115 entrants raising over $2,500 to be donated to the American Cancer Society.  Frank enjoys running this tournament and plans on doing so for many years to come.  “Thanks to everyone who takes part in helping out with this tournament”—Frank Poper.

In 1993 the Club held a benefit for the benefit of Bob “Peg Leg” Frable, to help in the cost of his artificial leg.  In 1994 we continued this event and called it Founder’s Day to celebrate the Club’s 40th Anniversary.  Cheryl Stager served as chairperson and we had a good turnout.

In 1994 we were informed that the lease for the Hamilton property was not going to be renewed for docks.  This left the club with only 80-ft of dock space.  In 1994 the membership voted to approach Mary Lynch about purchasing her three lots.  Mary accepted our proposal of $40,000.00.  The loan was finalized and the property was purchased.  This allowed for an additional 80-110 ft. of docks.

During the loan process we were informed that the Club in prior years had failed to maintain their incorporation status.  Bill Banks obtained the necessary forms and Cheryl Stager Completed and mailed the forms to Trenton.  On May 4th 1995, N.P.B.C. was once again a non-profit corporation.  We owe Bill Banks our thanks for completing the necessary permit forms for the EPA/State of New Jersey Forms.  The bureaucratic red tape was very burdensome.

In 1995 a new event was added through the suggestion of Mike Murray and George Plotts.  The Pig Roast in April was a roaring success.  Mike and George worked really hard and sold 125 tickets (a sellout) before the day of the roast.  We are all sure glad this has become an annual event which has merged with our Opening Day annually.

The 1994-1995 dart season was very successful for the club.  The American dart “B” team won the championship and the “A” team finished in 3rd place.  The Club English dart team also won their championship.  Our thanks go out to all the members who participated.

In 1995 the club started a Wednesday night horseshoe team.  We also had a Tuesday night pool league with the Garrison.  These teams help bring in revenue during the week and continue where the dart teams leave off in the summer.

In 1995, our Princess, Tara Schweigart, was selected as the D.R.Y.L. Queen.  Her father and Club Commodore, John Schweigart escorted Tara in the pageant.  Many members attended the pageant in support of Tara.

One of the main DRYL functions attended in 1995 was the Von Neida Picnic, held at Pennsylvania Yacht Club.  Our Club won the volleyball competition.  Our team consisted of Tom Decampli, Tom Norwood Jr., Bill E. Plotts, Tom McCaffrey, and Bud Eberwein.
