Nottingham Unitarians

Welcome to High Pavement Chapel

    the home of Nottingham Unitarians.

Ours is a peaceful fellowship,
a place where we come to renew our spirits,
to examine what we have learned,
to examine what is in our hearts
and to share this wonder with each other and the world.
Ours is a fellowship of friends, encircling, supporting
and encouraging the best each of us has to offer and may be.

All are welcome here.

Mr Michael Adcock, Cllr. Jeannie Packer, Sheriff of Nottingham, Rev. Chris Goacher, and Sir Peter Soulsby MP, representing East Midland Unitarians at the special service held to welcome our new minister.

Any of these statements sound familiar?
  • "I want a religion that respects the difference between people and affirms each person as an individual."
  • "I want a congregation that cherishes freedom and encourages open dialogue on questions of faith, one in which it is OK to change your mind."
  • "I want a religious community that affirms spiritual exploration as a way of truth."
  • "I want a church that thinks globally and acts locally on the great issues of our time : world peace, women's rights, racial justice, homelessness, gay and lesbian rights and protection of the environment."
  • "I want a straightforward, practical, ethical religion which affirms the importance of this life, with emphasis on respect for nature of which we are a part."
Answer yes? Then maybe you are a Unitarian without knowing it!

                What do Unitarians believe?

To ask what a Unitarian believes is to ask the wrong question because it presumes an answer based upon a
package of doctrines that sets out a fixed theological position.
Rather Unitarianism encourages a process of spiritual exploration and growth that is both inspirational and
transformative, a process that is, not a fixed dogmatic position, but a continuous spiritual journey, a journey
                that lasts a lifetime.
Rev Chris Goacher; Minister Nottingham Unitarians.

Unitarians Support Joint Relief effort

The Faith and Public Issues Commission of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches announces General Assembly support of the ‘Faiths Working Together Appeal’ for Gaza.

The Faiths Working Together Appeal is a call by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Head of the Muslims Charities Foundation and the Head of the Movement for Reform Judaism to help raise funds for the Gaza emergency work of Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel.The fund is open to all but has been initiated by the Archbishop with the support of people in the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities in this country. The Disaster Emergency Committee has agreed to support this additional initiative which has similar aims to their own appeal but which enables people of faith to demonstrate their unity.

The Rev Dr Williams said: “We understand the complexity of the situation in the region and we support the rights of Israel to security and self defense and Palestinians to self determination, believing that this can be best achieved through a lasting peace settlement. We cannot, however, stand by in the meantime. We are bound to play our part in the relief of suffering in the region generally and in Gaza in particular at the present time. We are assured that Christian Aid, PHR-Israel and Islamic Relief are able through their existing work to guarantee that funds are used for humanitarian purposes on the basis of need alone regardless of ethnicity, religion or nationality. They have long experience in many parts of the world and are trusted by their local partners.”
