30-03-07 Got your back like Timbo While I was writing my new music reviews for the ELLE May issue, I noticed that I was about to mention Timothy Mosley's name for the gazzilionth time in six months. He did JT's album, Nelly F.'s and in a couple of days he's about to drop his own & Bjork's... JT & Bjork, two people who could be working with anyone anywhere. Still they chose Timmy T. Sure, he's a moneymaker. But you can't accuse Miss Barney of being a golddigger. A couple of months ago JT said in an interview: "I trust him. He makes great stuff. He's got my back." Timbaland's got JT's back... Now you know that this one doesn't have to worry about rivalry gangs sneaking up on him and shooting him in the tush. But if you think about it, we all know what he means. It doesn't matter which part of town you're from: this sentence means exactly the same as "he'll protect my rep" or "he will kick my ass, but he'll kill you if you touch me" For most of my life I've known how that felt in my personal life because I've got the best big brother & some of the coolest friends in the world. And I thought I kind of knew how it felt professionaly. But you never know until worst comes to worst, don't you? And it did. Somebody totally cornered me -while I wasn't looking, cause otherwise I would've kung fu'd the b*tch- this is all metaphorically speaking of course. And I have to admit, I thought I only had two options: one involved giving in, the other one a good old headbutting. I started freakin' out. But some right words at the right time from my soon-to-be husband convinced me of trying a third option. He said: "Call the one that's got your back." I hesitated. Cause this was the first time that push came to shove. Will he? Won't he? I always had his. But does he know? So I called, rambled, explained, rambled some more... and he said: "Don't worry. I got your back." And I said: "But maybe they're right. Maybe what I'm doing is crap." And he said: "They should keep their mouth shut about stuff they don't know shit about. You're the pro. I know you. You'll make everyone happy " And I said: "But maybe they're right. I still have time. I can fix this. I can think of something else, I'll work 48 hours straight." And he said: "No, I won't let you. I trust you. I know you've got it covered. Trust me, I'll take care of them." And I said: "Are you sure? I don't want to dissapoint you." And he said: "I know you. You won't." He probably made some calls. Told a few people to back the fuck off. I went ahead as planned. All the people bothering before were tiptoeing around me. I didn't change a thing. When it was done, we got props from every level & from all over the country. Here's the thing: I could've done a lot better. I know it, damn sure he knows it. But he'd risk his own reputation if it meant protecting mine... It's one of the best feelings in the world. (try counting the people that got your back pro & privately) + (try counting how many backs you would cover, whenever wherever)

Some days are better than others. Those where you can have a relaxed sit down with Mr Gabriel Rios rock big time as you can imagine. Honestly, Angelhead is one of the most versatile albums I've heard in a while. The new single makes me feel not so alone when surrounded by assholes. "Stay" makes me feel guilty for sometimes being an asshole myself. 'For The Wolves' scares me & is on constant repeat on my car stereo. 'Tu no me Quieres' makes me sing badly but sexy -I swear- sounding Spanish (hé pana-ai-mama- or something like that) 'I'm Gonna Die Tonight makes me think': "No you're not, Gabriel. You're gonna make three more albums: One produced by Timbaland, the other one with ?uestlove & after that, damn sure Rick Rubin will be calling your ass." EL MICHELS AFFAIR A talented group of Jazz musicians (wait, don't run! it gets good in a second!) started specialising in live versions of Wu-Tang classics (see?) and before they could say 'Tsuuu!' RZA snapped them up for live shows in NY. Their 7" Shaolin series are much sought after collector's items, which is probably why Stefaan Pauwels thought it was worth it trudging through two hours of London rain and hail to cop these limited edition babies. The El Michels Affair can be heard hiding in these glaciers of MySpace. If you dig this, you'll love this bootleg mix of practically every soul jam ever sampled by the likes of RZA, Ghostface and Method Man.

(Luckily on both occasions we had a nice talk with people closely connected to the iconic shop -Leah from MOB & Ju from LaMJC- and that fed her habit a bit) So, you really don't wanna know how she's feeling about missing out on their 10th anniversary festivities because there's just too much to do chez NOTORIOUS. Sometimes the only thing a girl needs is red meat, white wine, Duvel & an all night long talk about cars & boats 2. Emails from two people I deeply admire, one of them giving me way too much credit and nicknaming me "Oprah Junior", the other one telling me that he read the review that I wrote on his album and calling it "really great". (By the way: congrats on the new baby boy T! I don't think the world is ready, though) 3. Lots of the kind of healing that Marvin sang about, thanks to my soon-to-be husband. 4. Two year old NJ knows how to count from one to five (she doesn't likethree though) 5. discovering that fab & very easy on the wallet denim company Cheap Monday started making shoes.
