Rail Yard Battle & Air Raid

Key to the war effort on both sides were rail lines. By rail, one could rapidly move a great deal of weapons, ammunition, and equipment from the supply bases to the front lines. Rail Yards, thus became an important asset for either side to control during wartime. The Allies, quickly dominating the skies over Italy, hindered German efforts in Italy by bombing rail yards that were vital to the enemy's efforts. High altitude bombers and fighters would strike at these facilities, damaging and destroying infrastructure, supplies, munitions, and the trains themselves.

German AA Defenses

The Allied Air Raid during the day strikes at the German encampment and rail lines, destroying rail equipment. The Germans, needing a train to move men and material, commandeer the passenger train waiting at the depot in Anzio. The journey of the Anzio Express begins.

The Rail Yard Battle at the Illinois Railway Musuem has the backdrop of the steam leads and materials yard. Defenses have been constructed around the yard and sides fight to hold, or take, control of the area. Vehicles, artillery, machine guns, and AA guns all are involved in this large, showcase, battle. Over a hundred of reenactors participate in recreating a realistic scene from WWII.
